Hey guys,

I just created this account to get some better answers as I believe this is an uncommon route in medicine. I am a Paramedic turn(ing) RN. I am based in California and am wondering of what my options are after nursing school. A little bit of info, I worked as an EMT-Basic for about a year before going to medic school and haven't worked as a medic yet. I don't have ACLS/PALS. Here are my questions:

  1. Will I have an easy time getting a job as an ED Nurse with my Paramedic and ADN, right out of school?

  2. Does the Paramedic license ever give a pay increase while working as a nurse in the ED? (I guess this would depend on scope)

  3. Have you heard of an expanded scope for nurses with medic in the hospital? (Will I be able to tube under an ED physician with my medic?)

I have no Bachelor's degree (just another Associate's) and I have previous work experience as a lifeguard and technology.

rn_medic, Hiya.. Welcome to NL. As a former ER nurse of 20 years, I can't give you fact but I can give you my opinion. 1st of all, I'd like to say congratulations on you furthering your education..When I worked in ER, we certainly did hire paramedics.. I think having your RN also, will give you the boost to get into the ER.. That's your expierence and that should surfice the requirements..However, I would get both ACLS/ PALS.. That was required in my ER.  We gave them a certain amount of time to receive it after the hiring process. As far as tubing, that is usually done by the RT or the Dr. on shift..I don't know being a medic with expirence who knows they may allow it.. So I do think that you shouldn't have a rough time getting into the ER..You would definately need the expierence and I think you have pulled that off. Pay would be determined by the hospital you work at.. The north, east and western coast would certainly be the best pay for a higher income...I want to wish you the very best of luck.. Please keep us posted on your progress... Teresa
