 The New Nurse Shopping List

Getting ready for your first day as a nurse? Grab your wallet – it's time to shop!

Congratulations on your new job! Nursing is an exciting and rewarding career that you will always cherish. As your first day draws closer, you'll need to get yourself prepared. Here is quick shopping list that will cover all of your basic necessities for the first day.

■A stethoscope – Look for one without latex in it. Some patients might have an allergy.

■Scrubs – Most nurses work three or four days a week. Make sure you have enough scrubs to last you between laundry days. You will work long hours and you need to always appear clean and presentable.

■Comfortable shoes – You will be on your feet a lot. You'll never regret choosing a quality pair of shoes, even if they are a bit more expensive.

■New socks – Purchase a decent supply of plain, white socks.

■A lunchbox – You know what they say about hospital food. Bringing your own lunch is also cheaper and healthier, and you'll avoid standing in lines during an already limited lunch break.

■Pens – Even if most of your charting is done on a computer, it is always best to have a pen ready if you need it.

■Immunizations – Find out what shots you need before you begin. If you're behind on any immunizations, get this taken care of while you run the rest of your errands.
