The TEAS exam is a test made by ATI that is taken by nursing students as a pre-admission exam. What Type of Material is on the TEAS exam?


This exams covers basic subjects that the nursing student learned about in high school. It is sort of similar to an ACT or SAT exam a high school senior must take in order to get into college. However, the TEAS exam is different in regards that it assesses how well the nursing student will do in nursing school based on the nursing student’s TEAS score. The subjects covered on the TEAS exam and the number of questions in each area are:

English: This section covers the nursing student’s knowledge of punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, contextual words, and spelling. There are 55 questions.

Math: This section covers the nursing student’s knowledge of whole numbers, metric conversion, fractions & decimals, algebraic equations, percentages and ratio/proportions. There are 45 questions.

Science: This section covers the nursing student’s knowledge of reasoning, science knowledge, biology, chemistry, anatomy & physiology, basic physical principles, and general science. There are 30 questions.

Reading: This section covers the nursing student’s knowledge paragraph comprehension, passage comprehension, and inferences/conclusions. There are 40 questions.

Proficiency Levels Overview


The ATI Comprehensive Predictor Examination has 3 proficiency levels: Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. Most nursing programs require that student meet a minimum of Level 2 proficiency on the exam before requiring intensive remediation to strengthen their deficit areas. Level 3 is the highest proficiency level and Level 1 is the lowest proficiency level.


The ATI Proficiency Levels are as follows:




Level 1 means that the student should meet the minimum requirements in their knowledge level, performance expectation, competency level, and NCLEX standards.


Level 2 means that the student is almost certain to meet the minimum requirements in their knowledge level, performance expectation, competency level, and NCLEX standards.


Level 3 means that the student is likely to exceed the minimum requirements in their knowledge level, performance expectation, competency level, and NCLEX standards.


Scoring below a Level 1 means that there are a great number of deficits in the nursing content. These students are encouraged to develop and complete a specialized plan of intensive remediation and review of their nursing school content.
