Dear Heather_LPN,

It is a Tetracycline Antibiotic used to treat acne. The generic ingredient in this is Minocycline Hydrochloride. Personally, I have never used this drug, but I thought I would give you a little info on it. Side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and sensitivity to the sun. If applying topically, apply generously to your skin until area is completely wet. Stinging or burning may occur, but it only  lasts a few minutes. It may stain skin yellow, but stain usually washes away. Avoid excessive exposure to the sun while taking this product.  I hope my 2 cents helps.

Hi Heather,

I have heard of Solodyn as I am also a pharm tech as well as a nurse. Your best bet would be to get the generic which is minocycline SR (the Solodyn is an extended release tab). As far as side effects etc... 09157238 has covered everything else for you. I just want to ask if you have ever tried ProActiv? I'm 32 & still suffer from acne as well. I have tried EVERYTHING including antibiotics (doxycycline), but NOTHING worked until I ordered the ProActiv & my skin has been clear for almost a year now! I have to use it BID or if I get lazy & don't use it a few times I break out again so I know it works... Just a thought. Good luck & I hope this helps.

Hi Heather,

I'm pretty sure the md has put you on the generic. Unless you are on minocycline hcl (immediate release) which is the generic of Minocin. minocycline hcl SR (sustained release) is the generic of Solodyn. The difference is the immediate release is generally taken q12h while the sustained release is taken q24h. So either way you are on the right med & the difference is how long it will keep a constant level in your bloodstream. I'm very glad to hear that it is starting to work for you, along with the retinol cream. Good luck & keep us posted. Isn't it great to have clear skin??!!!

Geez........all of those meds cost so much too.  It takes 5 yrs for a patton before something can get generic.  My son is 28 and married now.....when he was 14 he had really terrible acne as well.  His dermatologist put him on acutane.  I sweat bullets for years and still do because that med can cause birth defects........to what extent, im not sure, and since its been such a long time I pray any future babies will have no problem.
