Posted about 2 years ago Hi, my name is Aaron and I recently graduated the US Army's LPN course. I was wondering how much, in hospital, clinical experience a college or civilian school generally provides their students. The Army course was pretty intense and I have had over 1000 clinical hours in the Brooke Army Medical Center. I have also completed a 3 week internship in the ICU, where I performed ALL the patient care under an RN's supervision. My RN simply checked my charting and made sure I did everything properly. I did everything. It was awesome, and a huge boost of confidence that all my schooling had payed off and I could preform my duties as an LPN. Also I think my RN enjoyed the vacation :D I understand that I'm not going to find a position as an LPN in an ICU as a new graduate and that many hospitals only allow RN's with a critical care certification to work in the ICU. But every LPN job opening I can find wants a year or more of experience, except for care centers etc, where I feel spending a year will not improve my skill set, but cause me to lose/forget a lot of the skills that I have been using on a daily basis, like running IV pumps, woundvacs and other equipment, even starting IV's. These things are probably not often needed in a care center. I plan on enrolling in a BSN program as soon and my military transcripts are up to date, and continuing my education to become a CRNA. Thank you in advance for your input, I appreciate your time. Aaron |

| Posted about 2 years ago " Interesting...you say that you graduated from an LPN School via US Army? I never knew that the Army had an LPN program. There were a few Nursing Job Seminars that I had attended,( Pa.),where the men.women in uniform replied that they had positions, but only for RNs.Anyway, I was fortunate enough to have been assigned to the clinical group,( 12 students, out of 85 ),that acquired, " hands-on experiences", at 4 different hospitals,( 3 inner city, 1 suburban). It was not an easy course of study, though once you saw things," materialize",you were able to comprehend, thus remember,espec.**Pa.State Boards. It was money well-spent."

| Posted about 2 years ago i didnt know that the us army had an LPN program either. my hospital experience was that of about a month in a acute care step down unit. im in ohio and havent heard of any LPNs working in an icu though...my 2 cousins both are icu nurses here and they are both rns. and most LTC facilities want a year of experience also atleast the one i work for does the only reason i got in as a new grad was bc i got grandfathered in. but at my facility we have vacs, ivs, and ive started ivs on people maybe a handful of times so the need does arise it just depends on the kind of faciltiy you work in |
