Bedsores are a common problem that plagues individuals in senior care facilities, hospitals, and home care settings. The individuals it affects include diabetics (diabetic foot ulcers), spinal cord inury patients, the elderly, and patients in the intensive care unit.It affect 2.3 million people in the US; 60,000 of them die. It’s a debilitating condition that is very expensive and significantly reduces quality of life. If the condition can be detected early it can be prevented. However the standard early detection technique is unreliable since its manual and subjective. We are trying to tackle the problem of reliable early detection. We have developed a technology at Carnegie Mellon University to objectively and reliably detect bedsores.
