People are strange.. I always say the reason some peole put other down is because it makes them feel as good as you do..Sorry to say, they really aren't friends..Don't let them pop you bubble.. Go for it.. It is a lot of work but apply your self and you can do it..Good Luck and God Bless you. take care and keepin touch..Hugs,Teresa

Hey Texas, CONGRATS!  I know how hard it is to get into Nursing School.  I started this past year.  It has been challenging coming back at the age of 40.  In the past I worked as a corporate trainer so design my own training materials.  I have been passing them along to my other friends in nursing school, so decided to create a blog to share them with everyone.

I started posting some of the materials last week and will continue to do so over the next couple of years as I finish school.  You can find my blog at the DailyGrog. Just Google the name.  I can't put the link on here as a post.  It does end in .com

good luck!  -kyle

Congratulations to everyone who has started or been accepted into Nursing school.  It is the beginning of a big new adventure for all of you.  Others may envy you because you have done something that they WISH they could have, but never busted their butt (as you have) to achieve.

It can be a very rewarding career and if anyone tells you otherwise, they probably did not succeed or wasted the time they had in nursing school.  Study hard and your rewards will be great, now and in the future.

Tom

So how did you pay for school before assuming you took prereqs before being accepted into your program.  And as Theresa said the financial aid office should be able to give you some guidance.  There is money out there, just gotta search for it.

Texas is right! I searched things out and applied for everything I could. Even if you only get a scholarship for $250 here, $500 there, it can really add up! I am so blessed and grateful that I didn't have to pay for books and tuition at my college - I got scholarships that paid for it all. I'm sure there's something out there for you too, just don't give up. As Teresah mentioned, talking to the financial aid office should really help - mine gave me the lowdown on all the scholarships available and gave me all the apps right on the spot. As one financial advisor told me..."There are scholarships out there for having red hair and green eyes these days!"  lol

In my area (NC), we also have something called Code Blue careers. They give $1,000 every year to a select number of students. They are awarded based on best essay submission, GPA, etc. Also, if you know where you want to end up working, there are a lot of hospitals out there that also offer scholarships for schooling in return for a work contract (meaning you work for them x amount of years when you graduate).

So don't give up - keep searching for options and I'm sure you will find something to help. Best of luck!

Lu Jane, you rock. Thank you for your kind words...The grants and scholarships out there are pretty weird..Like you said, it could be for red=headed women. single women, women with children and the list go on and on.Yes your financial advisor should be able to help you with this..They have all of the information that you need..So good luck to you Texas832 and don't give up..Keep us posted..Hugs,Teresa

Try a Google searchs for: "student loans", "undergraduate student loans", "community college student loans", "student nurse loans", "student nurse financial aid", "rural nursing student aid" and whatever else you can think of.

Also check for areas that have need for nurses that are difficult to fill.  You may have to move to Arizona or Appalachia, but it will get you through school.  The top of my list would be to check with the Indian Health Service.  I know about the BSN recruiting and retention, but do not know about LPN/LVN or ADN-RN.

Hope it helps.

mhamber,

Once you are doing clinicals, I think that you will like them much more than the classroom (I did).  I would rather be on the floor caring for patients, than listen to a teacher drone on for an hour plus.

It also will make all those months in the classroom make sense, because the reason for all of your class you were forced to take, will start coming together and make sense (really).

I am not saying that it will be easy, but I always thought that labs and clinicals were much more interesting than the classroom and I am fond of the classroom.
