High school graduate on uncertain grounds....

Hello! My name is Lauren, I'm 18 and just graduated from high school. Over the last few days, I've been thinking a lot about what kind of career I am meant to have. I'm heading off to college in August with a declared major of English Literature and an intention of becoming a high school English teacher or a writer/editor. I have always loved books, writing, and grammar, and always been shy of  blood, anatomy, and hospitals. However, nursing has been in the back of my mind since I was a little girl. (I used to play doctor all the time with my friend!) I realize now that the sights and sounds of a hospital do not frighten me as I once thoiught they did, and I can clearly picture myself wearing scrubs and a stethoscope, examining patients in a hospital someday. Does anyone have advice with what I should choose? I am afraid to tell my family about my interest in nursing, because I have always strayed away from health-related issues in my own family, and I have expressed my distaste of anatomy, biology, blood, and medical people. So, now I feel like a two-face, because I will be contradicting everything I have ever expressed to them... I'm scared, but I feel as though I am meant to be a nurse, not a teacher.

Sorry for the long post!

Sincerely,

Lauren

Dear Lauren,

You sound like nursing is what you really want. Maybe you should speak to someone in the field at your local clinic or hospital to give you the lowdown on what they like or dislike about their chosen profession of nursing. Whose to say you can't do both. Become a English teacher and a nurse, that would be AWESOME.  You have the right to change your mind, so you said you didn't like blood or A&P. You're 18, and the possibilities are endless, my dear! Don't let anyone discourage you from pursuing one career or both, it's your life and your choice. You need to go ahead and tell your family about your interest in nursing, let them get their say in. But remember, you have to decide for you. I hope my 2 cents helps, GOOD LUCK and GOD BLESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Lauren,

Don't worry about what others say about you.  If they are talking behind your back, you don't need to be around those kind of people EVER! ! !  Also, the people who do such stuff are not in college (nor ever have been) and you will be.

That being said: Going to college is partially to go out and discover what you want to do.  If working on a Bachelors, one can nearly make it a full year or more without having to declare a major.  So you go to college and find out that you are cut out for something different.  That has been going in colleges for hundreds of years.

Do the major that YOU want to do it and do it for the right reasons..  And only you know what is right for you.  If not sure about nursing, try part-time as a nursing-aide while in your first year of college.  That could be a very telling experiance for you.

Good luck and please keep us posted,

Tom
