i am a cna and the nurse assigns room daily.  there are 3 sections, and each cna are assigned rooms.  my section has become easier so the nurse has now assigned me 14 resisdnets and the other 2  sections with 11 each...the problem with this is that the other 2 sections also have a few easier ones.. i have hinted to the nurse that i should not have this one resident, she took it away from me a week ago, sort of irritated by it, but have added this resisdent back to me the last couple days,,,i feel a bit angry about this, and feel like going to the director of nursing ....when i started at this nursing home a year ago, i had 17 and the other 2 sections had 13, and no one complained then...one of the cna,s is complaining a lot about my section being easier and i should have more......any comments on this would be appreciated...thanks ron

Yes, I do.  If others are complaining that your section is easier (and you know it's not), go to your head nurse and offer to make peace with the other CNA and offer to swap sections.  If what you say is true, they will basically scr-w themselves and you end-up with a smaller section.  That is what they call a win-win situation for you.

Good luck and tell us how it goes.

Hiya, I have to agree with Dr.Tom...However, I have a real problem with the amount of patients that all of the cna's are assigned. I think there needs to be an extra cna put into that unit.. I am forseeing a disaster or law suit waiting to happen. I definately would go up the chain of command. I also would report them to the owner and the county that you live in..There has to be a limit of patients to cnas and I don't think it's that high. That's a start. And you can do this anonomusly. If there are no actions taken then I ' would  go to the state.. Please be very careful on how many patients you have, If it comes a problem,  you are also liable for the care that was given or not.. Good luck to you and God Bless you in your future endeavors...Teresa

I hope that someone with more nursing home experiance than I would chime in here.

I remember (as a CNA and an RN) having similar staffing ratios (nursing homes only) when I was working in them in the early 80's.  I never agreed with them, but often, the nursing homes were having trouble breaking even, let alone make a profit (which many are for-profits).

Dear RONSS,

I agree with Teresah and Dr. Tom, I see a disaster waiting to happen. I can see your point about you getting the short end of the stick with 17 patients and then the other sections having 12 to 13. I see that CNA to patient ratio is awful. There's the problem of how much care can actually be done when you have 17 patients and you only have 2 hands. I'm a LPN, and having 17 patients is a handful. Take into account, you may have 30 meds for each patient, then there's treatments such as wound care, see my point.  But, as was already stated, you must work with your co-workers, go up the proper chain of command. There should be no back-biting, everyone is an adult, and I'm assuming perhaps they will conduct themselves as such. But nursing homes aren't known for proper staffing, when I did my clinicals, our nursing home was always understaffed.

Well in that case, I'd go right to the state... Also I'd be getting some serious liability insurance..  I can't in my wildest dreams would be able to care for that many patients.. Like you said you only have 2 hands..Some of those pts., are just not given any care..It's imposible to believe in my brain that the facillity would be so lax in  staffing... I would be the one that would not stay for the shift..I'm not talking about  abandoning the patients, but I'd be sure that the Director was called first to come now and take my place.. Be careful, it is a law suit waiting to happen.. Hugs,Teresa
