Posted over 5 years ago I am 56 years old and finally 2 years ago became a nurse. I had a terrible experience in an Intensive Care Unit and I quit because I was too terrified, too slow and too anxious . A friend told me to start again, but this time in Telemetry. Would this be the right thing to do? |

Posted over 5 years ago Are you an LPN or an RN? You can start almost anywhere. I would be terrified of ICU or telemetry. There are far easier areas to be in. You could even consider something like the Ask a Nurse phone lines. Chemical Dependency/Detox. Psych/mental health is what I am always going to try to persuade some one to do. I also went to school later. Do not give up. Just find your niche. Mine is not ICU or any where near that. IF I did not do psych or substance dependence, I have no idea what I would do.

Posted over 5 years ago Maybe you want to go to a less actice ICU. By that i mean some community hospitals have one ICu that functions as a tele unit also and in all reality ar really a "step down ICU". Don't feel bad, some people can jump right in and be ok others need to ease their way in. Do what will make you a better nurse.

Posted over 5 years ago There's always MD offices, assisted living =lots of other areas of nursing. Maybe start out slow with something low key, just to get your feet wet again and your confidence back. I had a bad experience once too and it left me second guessing myself all the time. I didn't even want to work as a nurse for awhile. But slowly and surely I got back in and realized that everything was ok and so was I.

Posted about 5 years ago Dont feel discouraged. One of my friends graduated last year and when she first started working she HATED it. She wanted to totally quit nursing and I just kept telling her, you know you just have not found your niche yet. She eventually left where she was working and went to a med-surg floor and now she loves it. She told me that she kept thinking about what I told her, that she just needed to find her niche. There are so many different things to do that right when you get out you need to try different areas and just see where you fit. Don't give up your dream for one bad experience, just try to find where you belong and when you do you will know it, because it will feel like home.
