another licensure and criminal record ?

Posted almost 2 years ago ok, so i've been reading and reading these posts on forums and i hate to add another to the pile but my question is a little different and probably alot worse. i'm going to type this as it is, no matter how bad it sounds because i need to know if i'm going to be a flat no or not. if there is a chance this side of hell i'm willing to try. i have a history of drug abuse, as reflected on my criminal record. i was charged with shoplifting, (theft <500) in 2008, i was placed on probation and violated less than a year later with 3 more charges, 3 felonies. 2 of the charges i should have never been charged with, but i was. 1. possession of drug paraphernalia- dropped to a misdemeanor. 2. tampering with or fabricating physical evidence- dropped period 3. and the BIG one, child endangerment- dropped to misdemeanor. the circumstances surrounding this charge say alot however i did not knowingly or willingly endanger anyones child. anyway, i plead to drug court march 2009, started getting clean. since these charges were acquired i have been to long-term treatment and was even employed at a treatment center for a few months before resigning my position and moving. i have been clean 15 months now and am doing well.(i know thats not a long time now, but after 2-3 years of school is a little better) i will graduate drug court in march, yes 3 years of it. i could get very favorable references from former counselors, probation officers, former employers, my judge, numerous health care professionals, but how much would it even help? i am not sure about expungement or dismissal after completion of drug court, i haven't spoken to an attorney yet since i would have to complete the probationary period before i could procede with anything. i was in school for nursing in 2005 until my marriage fell apart and i moved back home, then things went, well bad. i have seen the way the people on these forums judge and put down people who have a history similar to mine, and i'm sure those same are going to butcher me and i'm ok with that. i'm just looking for advice, i accept that some don't and never will understand or wish to help people in recovery, those that do, i would love to hear from you.. anyway, thanks for reading this very long question, ANY response is appreciated. |

| Posted almost 2 years ago Hiya, My name is Teresa and Shonnaasked forme to give you some direction on this issue. I will give you my best... 1st of all, it all sounds awful but believe me when I say there have been worse.I think the 1st thing is to get and attorney..They can assist you with all of the leagal mumbo jumbo, There has to be some communication between you and the BON and that''s part of what he can do for you. You may have to start out with a limited license, have probation for the BON, urine exams and maybe some more counseling. You may even need to pay a fine, or take some extra classes. Who knows? But those are alldoable and think you'l lhave buyers remorse if you don't give it a try.. If they say no, then atleast you gave it your best shot. But what if they say yes? So you have to give it a try, Congratulations on you 3 years of clean time, but the BON may want you to wait for futher abstinence. So I wish you the very best of luck and may God Bless you in all of your future endeavors.. I'm going to also forward this to Dr. Tom.. He's extremely intelligent and I'm sure he will give you more direction.. Please keep us posted, and let us know how you are doing. Sincerely, Teresa |

| Posted almost 2 years ago Hi there. I am Tom Conrad. Sounds like a rough road for you. I apologize if you have seen too much judgement comments here on the forums. As the moderator, I try to keep that crap to a minimum, but between being disabled and having my own life, I do not catch it all. Teresa and Shonna have both given you some good advice. I would say that your first stop would be your state Board of Nursing and ask to talk with someone who could help you sort out your problem. When you talk to them, tell them that you know that you messed up and want to make good. Ask, first, if they would entertain your being able to get into nursing, knowing that there would be conditions attached. It may involve legal remedies (for which you would need the lawyer). This is your first and foremost step to take. If they say NO, there would be no sense in wasting money on the lawyer. Under the guidance of the board of nursing, go through the hoops (you will have more than others, but you already know that). I could ramble on for a while about this, but it would waste your time and mine. First find out what the board of nursing says. You can find it under you state offices, probably in professional/technical registration. When you have an answer from them, come back and let us know what they said. We can help you from there. It might be easier than you think, or it may not. Don't fret over it until you talk to them. No reason to raise your blood pressure for nothing. This is just like fighting depression or dealing with any other problem, one step at a time. There is an old African saying about: How do you eat an elephant? -- One bite at a time. Take the first step, then we will know were to go from there. God Bless and drop me a line if you need anything. Tom (drtomconrad) |
