Posted almost 2 years ago Dear MRS_JOHNSON81, You want to start @ an academic advisor's office at the college!!!! I say make sure all the PRE-REQS are done, so when you get accepted you only have nursing courses to contend with!!!!! You must start early-right now!!!!! I don't know how many applicants your school takes, but you want to be in that group!!!!! You will probably start with a entrance test-that's to weed out folks-I say find out from your advisor if there's a test to and if there is a study guide you can purchase!!!!!!! If you know of any nursing students currently in the program you're wanting to attend, ask some questions!!!!!! I hope my 2 cents helps, GOOD LUCK and GOD BLESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted almost 2 years ago Thank you so much for your advice. It helped me to get going in the right direction. On another note why are Certain Nurses on here so defensive. If there are new students that are just as passionate about nursing and caring for other's positive feed back would help. There are to many Nurses that are in the field and have been for decades that aren't passionate about their jobs and are rude as hell. My life dream is to become a Nurse to take care of people and aid in making their pain less. I am kind and giving caring and don't like to see people hurting. I want to make a difference. So for all the nurses that are offened @ us soon to be nursing students and current student's and new nurses don't be. We are not all in this for the money. Stay blessed and have a wonderful day!

Posted almost 2 years ago Hello. I too will begin nursing school this month to be exact. Its true that all are not in this field for monetary gain. I know nursing school is not going to be easy nor do I expect it to be, which is why I am trying to gain a different perspective especially from those who have gone through school themselves. What better place to find it. God Bless as you begin school and please keep in touch to compare notes.

Posted almost 2 years ago Hiya Guys, I know many of you are just starting school or just starting to work.. Having been in those positions, I thought I'd try to relieve some anxiety that you may have.. When I first started school (back in the caveman days) I too was very noticed.. When I first started school I was 16 and not very worldly wise.. The first day came and we were all in a room and the professor stated, "Look to you left, look to you right If you are not prepared to give this class your all and , then some, 1 or the 3 will not graduate.. And he was right. When I first graduated, I had the incredible offer to work in the ER and they would train me...Nervous you say? I stood there for 20 years...Then I decided to do some teaching since my hospital was a teaching facility..Why not..But Nervous, OMG When I first started to teach I was very nervous trying to make sure that I taught every one, every thing that they needed to learn. But on the first day I ever taught, I remembered what the professor said...And I said the same.. I .also explained that I'm sure none of you know each other. But in about 3-4 weeks, you willall be about family in your class and it will the class against me. Every one chuckled, but guess what? Not to long after that they all became friends and helped each other out if they were having difficulties.. Well I'm happy to report, Out of 75 students, 60 graduated in my first class teaching. That was very impressive by the schools standard. What I'm trying to say ,is we all have been or will be in your shoes at one time or another.. And yes, nervous you'll be..But it can be done and you will have the most amazing career and new friends for the rest of you life.. Alll you need to do is put one step in front of each other and take it 1 day at a time.. Another thing to mention, is I didn't have NL at the time.. But you do and we are all here to help eachh other.. OK, There you go and I'll bet you will all have the same or similar expierences.. Good luck to all of you and God Bless all of you in your future endeavors.. And remember, we are here to help you too.... BTW I taught nursing, theory and clinicals for 16 years.. Keep us posted and enjoy the ride.. It will certainly be worth it. Oh, don't worry about the crabbie nurses, they don't want you to know, but they are still scared..LOL Hugs,Teresa

Posted almost 2 years ago Teresa, You are really full of good advice. Mrs_Johnson81, I cannot say too much more, because Teresa and Shonna said all of the smart stuff. Wherever you go, there will always be people who are pissed-off about one thing or another. The reason they are -- their stinking attitudes. But they can't figure the out because of the rut they created for themselves. Don't worry about being in this for the money. It is like my brother had said to me (we were both career military officers) "We are not going to get rich doing this, you know?" We served for the same reasons that nurses get into nursing, make the world a better place. Tom, PhD, MPH, BS(N), RN-C, CHN

| Posted almost 2 years ago I haven't been on Nursing Link in a while because I have been taking my pre-req's for the ADN program. I applied in February and got put on the alternate list for RN and was happy I didn't get chosen for Fall semester since it will give me time to finish the last three pre-req's I have. I will be applying again in September for next Fall. I signed in today to basically build my courage back up. I recently quit my job to concentrate on my classes and Anatomy in general. I took it one time already while I was still working and wasn't able to spend the time I needed studying.... TeresahRN do you have any advice for this class, it seems to be my weakness... I have done well up to this point and then bam. I was working in Dialysis and loved my job but realized I needed more time in the books since my days started at 3:30am and lasted until 3:30p by the time I got home and fixed dinner studying was not working because I would be asleep. Since I'm home now and have more time I was just wondering if you could give me some advice on grasping this class. I have both Anatomy's and Microbiology left and I will have all pre-req's done. Thanks in advance and God Bless you as well. I have enjoyed reading your post and your encouragement for those of us coming into the Nursing field.

Posted almost 2 years ago Dear 2BARN, I have actually taken both classes Anatomy and Microbiology!!!!! You definitely need time away from any distractions-a quiet place to get your mind clear of the day and to focus on all the material. Anatomy is the study of body structure-so you know the material will be every body system-Nervous, Muscular, Cardiovascular, Skeletal, Urinary, Gastrointestinal, and Blood/Lymph. I can't remember everything we covered, but 206 bones, 12 cranial nerves, 31 spinal nerves-just any and too much to mention!!!!!!! You may need flash cards of the systems-may can purchase some @ school's book store or maybe Barns & Nobles!!!!!!! I don't know if you own a smart phone, but they have applications for your phone to study by!!!!!! Microbiology is a whole can of worms-the study of microbes such as amoeba, flagella, nematodes, and bacteria!!!!! I actually enjoyed looking @ different things under a microscope!!!! You will probably have to do this class the same way-get you a quiet place @ home where nobody will disturb you, and you can study for at least 30 minutes!!!!!!!!!! Give yourseflf time to get back into a rountine- it will take a while, but you'll get one!!!!!! Try to rest and relax after studying, too!!!! You need time to replenish you mind and body!!!! I hope my 2 cents helps, GOOD LUCK and GOD BLESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Welcome back to NL, and I'm Shonna or 09157238!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted almost 2 years ago Wow! This is some excellent stuff! I still have alot of questions though. After graduating with a B.A. in Psychology in 2006 and an M.B.A in 2008, I finally am answering my calling to nursing. I too, like many others here on NL want to make a difference in the lives of others. So, having said that, I'm a little lost at where to start. I have requested and received an information packet from the college I would like to attend. I took A&P in college in 2005. Does every school require A&P to be taken within the last 5 years?? I'm curious as to if there are any provisions for nursing students who already have a degree(s). Would I have to start from scratch all over again?? Please help! I'm a little overwhelmed as to where to start on this exciting journey!!!!!

Posted almost 2 years ago Rhonda, You will probably need to talk to an admission counselor and nursing advisor to answer all of your questions. As a rule, most anything taken at the undergraduate or graduate level will be considered for an undergraduate degree. Where your BS is in psych, you could find yourself with a pile of your credits completed. My own experiance was that some of my courses like Child Psych required 3 sem hr and I transferred in only 2 sem hours. My BS required 120 or 128 sem hours to graduate and I had about 220 semester hours (not all of my transfer credits were accepted by the School of Nursing). I did get a lot of "A"s in the courses I had to take over. Tom Tom, PhD, MPH, BS(N), RN-C, CHN

There are some schools that offer accelerated BSN program for those who already have a Bachelors in other fields that will accept the pre req sciences as long as they were taken within the last 10 years, |
