Posted almost 2 years ago My sons are in LVN school in CA, they are becoming very discouraged by slim job opportunities and are fearful that they may be only able to find employment in longterm care if at all. One hoped to work in corrections , the other in an Emergency Dept. Any encouraging thoughts out there? Is it really as bleak as they say? |

| Posted almost 2 years ago Dear JENNYGK, I understand the discouragement!!!! Actually, the job situation is in chaos for all not just nurses!!!! Take my word for it, I'm a LPN who graduated Feb. 2011, got licensed back in March, and still @ the job hunt!!!! Tell them to hang in there, they're not the only ones feeling disappointed/discouraged right now!!!! They may want to start early-before they graduate from school, and are licensed-need to search for LPN opportunties right now!!!!! That was my mistake-not seeking jobs before graduation/licensure!!!!!!!!!!! Start looking early, like right now for employment!!!!!!!!!! |

| Posted almost 2 years ago I too am having trouble finding emplyment. I was starting to regret encouraging their nursing careers. I am signing up to volunteer at a hospital I worked at when my boys were little, hoping that some of my old coworkers, if they are still there could be a foot in the door for me or my boys. It is a good sugestion to look for employment ahead of time. I will certainly suggest this to them. Thank-You for your advice and encouragement. |

| Posted almost 2 years ago Thanks Teresa. I feel valued now. Jenny, you are doing it right. You are going to keep you hand in the mix and keep adding experiance and make new contacts in the industry that you and your sons are interested in. I am not sure where you like to work, but I know that working in the ER you run into police and correction officers frequently and they can always be a great resource for the corrections-minded son. If you worked ER, you could help pave the way for both of your sons. But, working anywhere in the hospital (or everywhere, if in the float pool) can be invaluable for you and your sons. Best of luck with the job searches. Tom Tom, PhD, MPH, BS(N), RN-C, CHN |
