I was really thinking long and hard on this one-I took Microbiology a long time ago, but enjoyed the class!!!!! The study of microbes have helped us develop some terrific drugs such as Penicillin, certain vaccines( MMR, DTaP)!!!!! Microbiology has also led to certain ways to eradicate germs-autoclaving, sterile technique(used during surgery or catheterizations), and  chemical agents!!!!!!  Studying the microbe life cycle can give you clues in how to handle it @ different stages - drugs used on cancer cells @ different stages can stop cancer growth!!!! You could turn all these advantages I mentioned earlier around to why we don't need it -have all these super drugs, vaccines, autoclaving, and chemical agents!!!!!!!
