Often times, I feel that this parable reflects how we are as nurses! We give care to so many people, there are so many needs, so many demands, but it is just a few that stop & come back to say "It was appreciated". The bible tells us how only one Leper returned to Jesus. Only one realized that it was Jesus that healed him, and he turned back & glorified God!! There are times when we feel like all we do is in vain! Underpaid, understaffed, overworked, not enough supplies or support! But, when you look back on your career......tell me, is there one? One that said thank you, one that hugged you or brought you flowers or a gift!! One that bragged about the care YOU gave??? Can you find just one? One patient or family member who appreciated your service?? Empathy is a quality of a caring person, one who is able to understand what other feel or go through! There are many patients who think, they pay our salary, they are our boss, and that "Its your JOB to do what you do for them!!" But it is God gives us the unction to help others, to do for others, when they can't do for themselves! It is God who gives us knowledge itself!!! I bet, if you look back hard enough, you'll find that one person who came back to say thank you!! And that one person, just that one.....makes it worth it all! GBU Luke 17:12-19 As Jesus entered into a certain village, there were ten lepers there crying out "Master, have mercy on us!" Jesus looked at them and said "go show yourselves to the priest." As they went they were cleansed of their leprosy. one of them, when he saw he was healed, returned to Jesus and shouted "Praise God!" He fell to the ground at Jesus' feet, thanking him for what he had done. This man was a Samaritian. Jesus asked "didn't I heal ten men?" Has not one turned to give glory to God, except this forigner?" And Jesus said to the man, stand up and go, your faith has healed you! |
