Posted about 5 years ago I know eveyone has heard about the recent news about the Valentines day Masacar in Ohio ,There has been recent shootings in New York, Lousinanna, Tenneseses, California, and last Virginia, etc. What can we do as Parents, Nurses, and Learning Institions, to safe guard our schools from this type of madness, from happening in the future. What are the warning signs, that we can recognize, and what early interventions plans can be implemented, this has been a serious problem nationally, and needs to be addressed promply, of the recent incident, two cases involves not taking Anti-Psychotic medications their schelduled dosages of medications, this has been a great threat to us, and our children, how many of our youth has to have their live's shorterning, because of madness. Please speak out or comment on this!! I am a proud mother of three beautyful daughter. I currently live in Los Angeles California. I've worked as a heathecare provider for almost 10 years. | Posted about 5 years ago My mom is a school teacher and they now require all the doors be kept locked. Anyone who is an employee must have a badge on. If you are a visitor, you must sign in and out at the office. I don't know how we can ensure people are taking their medications appropriately. Maybe high risk individuals should be required to check in with a home health nurse periodically for a physical, mental, medication evals. I don't know how this would be paid for. ?? And what if we (the nurse) finds they are not taking their medicine and they refuse to take it, then what? |

| Posted about 5 years ago Things are really getting scarey out there! We HAVE to find a way to protect our children and grandchildren. They are so precious to us. I*'m not sure how to go about monitoring youths with mental health problems to ensure they are taking their medication. Perhaps, as jblack suggested, they could be monitored by home health nurses. And if found non-compliant, they have to be admitted to a mental health facility. But this would cause overcrowding. Perhaps they could call in and check in at frequent intervals. I'm not sure what needs to be done but something does! We as a country need to address this issue now. |

| Posted about 5 years ago I think that institutions need to take that extra step in their proactive approach. There are many security methods available (think about the airports and court houses post 9/11), we should not just close our eyes on this disturbing growing issue, we need take this issue to DC where laws and funding can be made available to make the necessary security improvements. |

| Posted about 5 years ago NO matter how many shootings I hear of it always leaves me in disbelief. Stories such as the Virginia Tech shootings add to the stigma of mental illness. Most mentally ill people are not killers. It is well known that noncompliance of medications is a major hindrance in the treatment of mental illness. We have gone from one extreme to the other with patient rights. They do have the right to refuse medications. |

| Posted about 5 years ago You are right CD, in the case of the Virgina Tech, situation, everyone closed their eyes to fact, even the guys parents hide his mental problem , knowone heeded to the warning signs. I think, schools should do a mental evaluation on their students, just the same as we are ask to take a college entrance test. The colleges need to address mental problems, just like it facillitates disabled students, you said CD, that we can't make a person take their psychiatric medications, so their should be a stigmitation, that says, you must take your medications, or you can't attend school, and have it verified, to make sure you took your medication, like Char said, a home health nurse, school nurse, parent, caretaker etc. Like Char said, this has to be taken care of ASAP, we and our children, grandchildren are at risk, it is happenning to often. | Posted about 5 years ago I hate to say that I don't think we can do anything about these people taking their meds correctly. I know my kids have gone through practice drills in their classrooms to get on the floor or hide behind their desk if someone were to start shooting. Other than that, I say we just have to pray for our children each day. A good man loves other. A better man loves God. A great man loves God and lives well among others! I miss you daddy!
