SLUG stands for Student Learning Under Guidance. Here we can post advise and learned experiences for future nurses. Here's some good advice I recently ran across. If you don't get emotionally involved with patients, it's time to change professions. / Even if you can't cure-you can still care. / Healing the spirit is just as important as healing the body.

Thanks Charlita, I was curious as to what slug meant. I am certainly finding many mentors here. I'm glad a friend told me about this site!

charlita-I love that saying by Maya Angelou-I really try to live my life by it. Advice for SLUGs- 80% of communication is nonverbal. When talking to your patients. doctors, whoever, always be mindful of your nonverbal. You may not have said anything wrong, but the expression on your face could be percieved as uncaring, rude, etc. It's all in the perception.

Yup, if you think you have seen it all, work in the ER on a payday weekend... LOL. For the SLUGs, I guess that I am one too. Learn when to talk and when to be silent, sometimes patients are not seeking answers but someone who would listen.

Al you said a mouth full. Most of us would love someone to listen when we are at our weakest points.

Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil. We are not our patient's judges. We are their caregivers.

Don't bring home to work with you, not unless it's something edible

give your WWHHOOLLEE tender loving care with your PT. fulfill their emotions, treat them as a family of yours,, dont make them sad..embarased..or isolated. also... have a good commmunication with them..

years from now, it wont matter how you did on a MAJOR EXAM or what your BOARD RATING was. No one wll care what your STET'S color was. It wont matter if your SCRUB SUIT was messy or if your ASSESSMENT style wasnt the best. but if u made life a little better just for ONE PATIENT, "as a NURSE, that's how you/we will be remembered!" =)

You make such eloquent sense my dear. One day and One patient at a time you make your career either one to be proud of or one to be ashamed of, which will you be on judgement day?
