Posted about 5 years ago Hi! where do you think is the best place to work and stay among Oakland, Tarzana, and Newport beach? I really have no idea about these places, though i tried researching them on the net,I still want to hear some advice. I was given a choice by my recruiter as to where I want to work, their nursing homes are located in these three places. I need help! |

Posted about 5 years ago I am a travel nurse and I have worked in more cities in California than I care to admit... Oakland would definitely be my last choice of the three. Tarzana is near Encino which is very suburban and ,in my opinion, a bit snobby. Newport Beach is nice, but the traffic is bad in the summer and the housing is not great unless you can budget a lot of money. What nursing home system will you be working for?

Posted about 5 years ago thanks for the post! il be working in flagship healthcare Center if i choose to stay in newport beach, it's under SAVA senior care..Actually im still thinking about it cause i haven't seen the agreement yet..Im from the Philippines, i just contacted a nurse recruiter,i knew her from a friend of ours..Do you think $30 per hour is sufficient enough to sustain my needs if I decided to reside in Newport?I researched about it and it seems that the cost of living is high.

Posted about 5 years ago Newport is really expensive--$30/hr seems like a decent wage for skilled nursing in the area. Housing will be cheaper the farther you are from the beach. Does SAVA pay for your immigration or housing? I had heard that the visas for nurses coming in from outside the U.S. could not get visas approved?

Posted about 5 years ago Yeah, SAVA will pay for the attorneys and 1 month housing according to the recruiter. There's still a retrogression here in the Philippines, that's why the visas are on hold. The US can't provide enough visas for Filipino nurses cause of the crazy number of applicants who want to work there. I pray that it will be lifted anytime soon. What does it like to be a travel nurse?I thought of being one before. Is the compensation same as a hospital nurse?

Posted about 5 years ago Being a travel nurse is great for me... I've worked in many different cities and I don't get into the day to day politics at the hospitals. The compensation is usually higher than the hospital nurse pay (I have a sister who is a hospital nurse, so we compare notes a lot). You also get travel reimbursement and free housing/furniture/utilities and medical insurance. It' not for everyone though...Sometimes you're not treated very well by the permanent hospital staff at some hospitals. So how long before you come to California?

Posted about 5 years ago I think it will take 1 1/2 years to process my papers for an immigrant visa, the most is 2 years, i guess, but im not in a hurry though, besides im still young. The retrogression contributes a lot of delays in visa processing. I already passed the copy of my documents to the law firm affiliated to SAVA, but i haven't signed a contract with them yet, once we receive the agreement from them we'll have it reviewed by a lawyer first. Are you an American? In what state are you residing right now?
