Posted about 5 years ago Anyone who is or has worked in the pediatric nursing or neonatal nursing area, i have a question. How did you go about your schooling? These are two fields i am very interested in when it comes to nursing, and i was wondering how you guys got into the field you are in today. Volunteer work? Internships? What all did you do to help you prepare, and where did you attend school? Any information is of great help for little ol me.
Thanks guys! |

| Posted about 5 years ago Basically, I started out in a traditional 4 year university nursing program. I met my husband, had to be married because of my undying love and dropped out of the 4 year school since newlyweds could not afford it. I could afford to go to school for 1 year and become a LPN. I finally after 10 years could aford to go back and get my RN, but I could not afford to quit work, so the on-line scholl was the best choice for me. I went to Excelsior College out of New York. As for the pay, I am not sure what you are asking. I currently do pediatric case management and lactation consulting, the pay is in th emiddle, but the hours are great! |

| Posted about 5 years ago when you are in nursing school, you can decide which speciality you want to do, when you do clinical rotations. You really don't need any prior experience. However, neonatal nursing, might require some experience, maybe in a ICU. Most premature baby's require special care. Most neonatal nurses work in a PICU critical care, which is pediatric intensive care. unit . I got expose to peds as a tech, I have worked in maternity, Pediatric Intensive Care, and on a regular pediatric floor. You should try working as a tech, it is great exposure. I am thinking about working in Pediatrics, when I become a RN. I want to oneday, have a business, in sick day care. I love babys. I am already license as a daycare provider, with the American Red Cross, I took their CPR daycare licensing course last year, all I have to do is pass a home inspection, and I can start my business. My daughter and cousin, will help me run it, I am so anxious to start. Pray for me. I am a proud mother of three beautyful daughter. I currently live in Los Angeles California. I've worked as a heathecare provider for almost 10 years. I am curently in school to pursue my MSN in nursing, and wants to work as a pediactric nurse, in public health. |

| Posted about 5 years ago I received my BSN from a school in Chicago. I did worked part-time in a hospital on the pediatric department as a CNA/Student Nurse Tech and that helped with getting used to working with a smaller population. I now work in a pediatric emergency room as a new grad, I find that the experience as a CNA really helped out. Good Luck STFUNicol. |

| Posted about 5 years ago You can't do the nursing stuff, if you are a volunteer. You can get hands on experience clinically, for 12 hours. I use to work at this convalescent home, and the had volunteers working in a there also, they can assist with activities, and feedings, and ect. The nurses, and aids, bath the patients, and changed diapers etc., when you a Tech, you can do nursing related things to the babies, when you a volunteer, you only can volunteer for a certain amount of hours,, even candy stripers do nursing related things, but when you are a tech, you work there, by the way, I am not a nurse yet, I am studying for my LVN boards, will be going to nursing school soon, trying to get on a waiting list. Thank you for the comment. Just get accepted in any RN program, and let the program help you decide for you. Good Luck youngin!!! I am a proud mother of three beautyful daughter. | Posted about 5 years ago STFUNicol said: I didn't explain my self clearly, when I said work as a tech. I live in Los Angeles California, and here in this state, you can apply at any hospital as a hospital tech, as long as you are a student nurse. It is good experience, when you are a nursing student, so it want be such as shock to you, when you do decide to work in a hospital as a nurse, and you can work on a floor, such as pediatrics, and you can get a feel, of the nursing duties that nurses do. That's how I got my experience working as a Hospital tech/Unit Secretary/Clerk. My experience made me eligible to challenge the California State Boards of nursing as a License Vocation Nurse. I am done with all my Rn preriqusites, once I pass the States Boards, I am eligible with my License Vocation Nursing License to brigde over to any Rn program, I can have hours credit to me. Chek with your local hospitals, to see what is there policies working as a Hospital Tech. You can work part-time. That's what alot of nursing students did where I worked at.
