I'M A NURSING STUDENT APPLYING TO THE BSN PROGRAM AT FSU AND FAMU FOR THE FALL 08 SEMESTER. MY BIGGEST FEAR IS THAT I MAY GET REJECTED BECAUSE CERTAIN STEREOTYPES THAT COME ALONG MY APPEARANCE. I AM AN AFRICAN AMERICAN MALE WITH OUTSTANDING ACADEMIC ACHIEVMENTS. I AM AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF THE PHI THETA KAPPA INETRNATIONAL HONORS SOCIETY AND I HAVE MAINTAINED AN OUTSTANDING GPA. DO YOU THINK ALL OF THAT WILL BE OVERLOKED BECAUSE MY TATTOOS, DREDLOCKS & GOLDTEETH? I REALLY HOPE NOT BECAUSE IF I AM OVERLOOKED, THE NURSING PROGRAM WILL BE MISSING OUT ON A EXCELLENT STUDENT..I AM CONFIDENT IN MY ABILITY TO EXCEL IN THE PROGRAM BUT IN GREAT FEAR THAT I MAY BE REJECTED.. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY ADVICE OR A SIMULAR SITUATION TO MINE?? A

yo- nursing is def. not a male inviting profession...i give you props for even considering it, but it truly is a remarkable opportunity for ANYONE! I think it is important to know who you are as a person and hold on to what really matters to you. I think you will find that your unique personality to the profession truly could offer something powerful. My advice is to just be yourself- if helping other people is what you want to do for a living then people should judge you based on that. Perhaps it is your calling in life, to pursue the maile nurse gig...the world will never know what they will miss out on if you dont follow through with it. Good luck

Although I cannot attest to being a minority or a male trying to get into the nursing program, isn't it annoying that one even has to worry that their appearance will overshadow their academic credentials or personality?! I wouldn't worry about it too much though... the worst I could suggest would be that you would have to cut your hair and cover your ink. Good luck, we definitely need more talented men in the field!

hey yo! men! nursing is for everyone!! it doesnt have any limitations in the appearance,, just be neat and very clean with yourself and with all the things you're handling. don't let the bling blings hang all around you when you're in duty, or it might look unethical towards your program. but, dont think about the rejection coz of the appearance. the key in nursing profession comes form the 'heart' of the care giver, and not with the 'appearance'.. just stay what you are,, stay cool,, dotn let the stereotypes let you down... okie? alright? good! hehe. LOL =)

I wouldn't let your appearance scare you off from trying to become a nurse. I have seen all different kinds of people in the nursing program and there were alot of them that had tattoos. Some of the tattoos were of things that I'd rather not mention, but everyone including the nursing instructors were very nice to all their students regarless of their appearance. One male student who had a tattoos all over his legs came to class with shorts on all the time and no one said anything to him and he turned out to be the smartest of our class! So go for it, become a nurse dude!!!!!!

I wouldn't let that bother me , like she said if the worst suggest would happen, trimming your hair, or pulling it back into a pony tail, during nursing clinicals, and covering your tatoos, will be your only problems ,you will qualify academically, and your willingness to be a nurse, is all you need, you Qualify!!. Good Luck!!!

I am a proud mother of three beautyful daughter. I currently live in Los Angeles California. I've worked as a heathecare provider for almost 10 years. I am curently in school to pursue my MSN in nursing, and wants to work as a pediactric nurse, in public health.

I agree with the other posters here. Your academics speak loud and clear that you are an excellent candidate for nursing. You may have to modify your clinical appearance as suggested, cover the tattoos and your hair will have to be put up out of the way, Hopefully you would not be expected to cut it, ladies are allowed to pull their hair up or back so in our Politically Correct world you should not have any problems there.

Don't sweat the small stuff, go in with confidence and respect for yourself and your interviewer and you will do great!
