So we had a capping ceremony and it was lovely. But now what do I do with this white cap that no longer has a function? It has sat on my bookshelf in a ziplock bag for months now. I hate the way it looks laying there that way. But if I take it out of the bag it will get dusty and attract the ever present animal hair. Does anyone else have theirs displayed? How did you protect it without it looking strange?

So have your cap professionally 'framed' or 'boxed' - see through, of course so that everyone can see your accomplishment. Show it off!

At a place I worked, nurses were suppose to wear their caps during Nurses week. Well no one did. I couldn't even find mine.

Hey, when I do clinicals there are a bunch of nurses wearing the white uniforms with their caps. they get a discount on meals if they do.

Keep your cap, even if you never wear it. I lost both of mine (LPN and RN) and have been regretting it ever since.

Yeah Keep it I look at the old photos at school and now wish I could find my hat. How proud I was when I received it and my school pin. it proclaimed to all I was a nurse. Silly I know but it did. -

I still have my hat in a ziploc bag too. I've pinned up on my wall with a push pin. I don't know what to do with mine either, but can't bring myself to throw it out, but I know I will never ever wear it again. I guess it does have some sentimenal value.

well thanks chq, but it's the truth! I hated the cap, hated having my hair pulled out when it got caught on something, Hated the headaches I got from the pins used to secure it, pressed into my head. So, would I ever willingly wear one again? NOT

Whenever I get mine, sometime around 2013? Not sure what I will do with it, however people need to keep coming up with ideas for me... :)

i haven't seen any schools that give caps anymore. we just get a pin for graduation and my sister didn't get one 10 years ago. in early '80s we had the capping ceremonies, and I was extremely proud of the cap. then reality hit...making beds with it on giving baths, pt knocking them off. i'm glad we don't have to wear them now!

I found http://www.kayscaps.com/
They sell caps and a neat case. The case is only 3.50 and yes guys, some schools still do capping ceremonies. The guys just get pinned. It is a tradition, perhaps one that is passing away, but still here.

https://www.kayscaps.com/eshop/10Expand.asp?ProductCode=KC-100
copy and past the above shortcut to your browser and it will take you to the case.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I just checked out the caps, makes me want one for graduation. It just doesn't seem right not to have a cap for the ceremony. I felt so special when we said our pledge and they capped us for the practical nurse coarse, it really was a major accomplishment. We are debating on lab jackets...some want them others don't. The thing is anyone can wear a lab jacket not everyone get the cap. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to wear it to work it just seems like a trophy in a way.

No one can stop you from buying one for yourself or your class from picking a cap and having your own capping ceremony between yourselves.

Although I don't work in the hospital anymore, I wore my cap all the time. It was small enough not to be in the way and I was proud of it. If you don't wear it anymore, keep it forever. My sister and I still have the caps our mother got in 1929. When she died we buried her nursing pin with her. She hadn't practiced since she got us in the 50's, but kept her license active until she got really sick 2-3 years prior to her death. Once a nurse, always a nurse.

I am in  flex program at a technical school that also offers other classes in other fields for adults and high school kids.  We only have 1 ceremony a year-in May-wether you are done or not.  The criteria to be elidgible to participate in the ceremony is to be 2/3 completed with the program.  I was eligible, but I still have about 3-4 months of school left----

so, long story short--recieving my cap was like giving a kid a sucker and telling them that they just have to look at it and admire it....but I got it and I am almost done so I guess I should quit whinig and count my blessings.

I'm a little bummed we didn't get a cap for our ceremony, we had a pinning ceremony and I still have my pin. But it seems like I missed out on a huge tradition not getting a cap. I probably never would have worn it but it would have been nice to have.

I just graduated and we wore our caps during the graduation ceremony with the tassel attached.  It was cute.  I am going to buy a display case for mine.  They sell them at Michaels.  I also saw a clear bag sold on e-bay for you to keep your nursing cap in.

We had to buy our caps and wear them during graduation. The one and only time I wore it.  I threatened to wear it for Halloween and be a real NURSE. lol Carry a big syringe with me. How many people do you think would be scared?

I have a LOTTTT of nurses in my family and I remember all of them and their caps.  The last nurse in the family to finish was my aunt in the 80's.  Her school had the cap ceremony.  She still has her cap in a hat box.  I remember my older aunts and grandmother wearing their white dresses and hats proudly.  My school does not offer a hat ceremony only pinning.  I was debating if I was goind to attend my graduation at all.  I finish in October and my graduation will be in December and my school only gives 4 tickets per student.  So OP keep that hat and pull it out on ocassion so you will remember what you have accomplised in your nursing career.

I have ball caps, cowboy hats, skull caps, stocking hats, hats that fit and hats that don't.  Never got a nursing hat and, haha, don' know what I would do with it.  However, I still have my Air Force dress hat.  I proudly display it  in my office.  If you have a Nursing Hat display it.  I would had that been something a man would wear.

We didn't even get caps.  None of the nursing schools I knew of in the area gave out caps anymore.  We had a pinning ceremony.
