Hi I just recently graduated (ADN) and I am in the processes of looking for a job. I can't decide between 2 job offers I recieved. One is working part time days in a clinic. There is no nights, weekends, or holidays. The other is what I've wanted to do...work in the ED. It would be part time nights or evenings, every other weekend, and holidays. I have children so the day job would be more practical, but the ED is where my heart lies. If you were me what would you do? Be a mom or follow your heart?

I worked nights while my daughter was at home. Working nights allowed me to go to school functions and be there for her...I missed sleep now and then, but I didn't have to ask for time off to be with her. Working days it was hard to take her to the Dr, got to swim meets, or anything else for her. I did put off school while she was at home and growing, now that she is doing her thing I've gone back to school to get my RN and do what I've always dreamed of doing...ICU. It's hard to say which is better. I've got a terrific daughter that has grown to be a great person and I'm young enough to follow my heart now.

Please don't pay any attention to my misspelled words or typos. Sorry I'll try harder next time.

that is a hard choice. working in the ED would be a great learning experience, especially since you just graduated. But you have to weigh the good and the bad of each position and decide for yourself. I worked nights when my kids were young so I could be home during the daytime for them especially in summer months. Sleep was erratic but I survived. Do what feels right for you.

Ultimately, you have to make your own choices. Chances are you will make more money in the ED. You will also have more career advancement opportunities and make the best use of the skills you learned in nursing school. Clinic work can be fun (I've done it) but is not as challenging as the ED.

It sucks working weekends and holidays, but that's the price we pay as nurses. I worked nights most of my career, and eventually grew to prefer it over days, especially in the ED. My primary background is in the ED, and I still love it.

Since you would be working part time in the ED, not full time, I see no reason why you can't be both a mom and follow your heart. If you are married there's no child care issues. If you are a single mom, have you discussed care options with family?

But ultimately: do what's best for your situation.

I'd like to add, in thinking about your situation, the clinic might be your best route for now. With no weekends, holidays or nights, that will work out best if children are involved. Later you can transfer to ED when your kids are older. Prehaps you could work PRN in ED dept. while working at the clinic, just to get a feel for it and for learning experiences.Again, I say, you must make the choice that feels right for you. If you make one choice now, you can always change your mind later.
