Posted over 5 years ago You think of something else and try to block out the sounds and smells. All nurses gag, at sometime or another

Posted over 5 years ago I've always had a problem with gagging too. It's embarassing. I try not to let the patient see me but I can't help doing it or control it. My gagging usually occured during cleaning up of bm. I've had 4 children and 4 grandchildren and didn't experience it wtih them. (maybe rarely) When I worked in the hospital on night shift, one of our duties was to give the enemas in the early am. Sometimes we'd give 3 or 4 in a row.I wore a mask and gown. I know it's ridiculous but hey whatever works. You can also rub some Vicks vapor rub under your nose before you start your unpleasant duties.

Posted over 5 years ago the older I get the worse I am with gagging from smells. I could tolerate anything in my younger years, not any more. The other day one of the other nursing students brought in Burger king food and I gagged...loud. It was so gross and embarassing too. I don't know what my problem is. I'm turning into a wimp!! Hey is that part of becoming a RN? Just curious. Please don't pay any attention to my misspelled words or typos. Sorry I'll try harder next time.

Posted over 5 years ago Thanks for all your answers...At least I realized that I'm not the only one.I looked at my school mates and none of them seems to have any problems...Or maybe they know how to hide it better than I do.I was pretty much desperate yesterday.Despite all my great results so far, if I can't find a way to handle this problem, there is no way I'll be a good nurse. None of the nurses that I've seen working around me gagged ...ever.And I want to be just as good.I guess I'll just pray that it will get better, even though from what you guys said it doesn't get better with time:-(

Posted over 5 years ago One thing I do is cough if I get gaggy...it seems a bit more acceptable. It kind of clears the gag feeling and stops it from going any further. Please don't pay any attention to my misspelled words or typos. Sorry I'll try harder next time.

Posted about 5 years ago Im a nursing student and for a while I worked in the ER as a tech, and for me as far as the smells go, CARMEX is my friend. Anytime I knew I was going into a smelly situation, I had carmex on me and I would rub a small amount just under my nostrils and above my lip and all I could smell (95% of the time) is the lovley menthol smell of carmex, kept my sinuses clear too. Ha-ha.

Posted about 5 years ago I feel your pain. I gag sometimes too. Here's another idea that I've been known to use. Use a mask (tell the pt. and or family that you have a little cold and don't want to spread it, if necessary) and put a few drops of some strong-smelling essential oil in the inside of it (peppermint oil and lavender work well). That's ALL you'll smell!
