I'm a 51 y/o male and have worked 25 years as a Polysomnographic (Sleep Disorders) Technologist. I have my RPSGT registration, a BA in Liberal Studies, and was a certified nursing assistant way back when. I had considered LPN school in the early 80's but at the time something pulled me into Sleep testing. I have a friend who's been accepted to a graduate school going for her ARNP. But she's in her 20's. It got me to thinking though about possible career moves for me.
I've always respected the nursing community and their high standards regarding training and care for patients. I truly wish the sleep community would do the same thing. But that's a whole 'nother novel waiting to be written.
So, having said all of that, is it even possible for someone with my background to even think about becoming an ARNP? I would like to work in a clinic setting, seeing patients for a Sleep Lab, referring them for testing and therapy.

Sure why not sandman and I think you'd be a prime candidate for one of the MSN programs they're offering with your experience and background.

Thanks dmazment. But would I be able to find an MSN school that would take me without having an RN degree and nursing experience?

You have CNA experience and you've worked as a sleep disorder tech. I don't know where you live but there are Universities offering this program to people who want to be nurses who have totally unrelated bachelors degrees.

I live in Iowa, but really would like to relocate to a larger, warmer area. I wasn't aware of nursing programs that would do that. I'll check into that. Thank you!

Sandman: There are MSN programs that will train you for RN and MSN at the same time: the University of Maryland has such a program. But there aren't a lot of them. You usually have to have a Bachelor of Science degree, though. I don't know if the sleep study experience would grant you an exemption, but it wouldn't hurt to ask. You would have to do the Advanced Nurse Practitioner program later: they don't take new RN grads. They want students with at least a couple of years of nursing experience.

But don't let that stop you! I have a friend who went to med school in her 50's and is now an ER doc (and a very good one). Lots of nursing students in my class are Older than Average: I have lots who are in their 40's, and occasionally students in their 50's and 60's. You are never too old! I am in my 40's, have multiple degrees in two fields (Nursing and History) and am back in grad school again for FNP. Guess I just love going to school :)
