I noticed that so many people were commenting on the article on nursing pay. What has been your experience with nursing salaries? Are they all as low as the article suggests, or does it vary greatly depending on locality?

Nursing pay will always be way too low no matter what the location until we have more men in nursing. Just look at the pay for all other jobs with a 4 year degree or a masters. the only lower paying is social work or teaching.

Thanks cdnurse. That being said, have you seen a marked increase in nurse pay in the last few years as more and more men have entered the profession?

No. But males still earn more than females. It will change. Men are still better a negotiating than women; particularly in the South. New York and California pay higher rates thanks to the strong nursing associations in those two states.

While New York and Cali pay more, they also have a much higher cost of living. I recently found an article th at showed severals states and compared the average nursing salary as well as the cost of living. A few of the top paying cities with relatively low costs of living were Houston, Phoenix, Tampa/St. Petersburg, and Atlanta. There were others, I just can't remember them.

Nursing pay is way too low considering all that has to be dealt with in nursing. With the nursing shortage on the rise-this is one of the first things that should be considered and changed to offer incentive to anyone considering joining the healthcare profession.
