Posted over 5 years ago My boyfriend and I are thinking about getting a Great Dane. I went looking for places close by that breeds them. It made me cry to see those cute little Dane puppies. There was one picture of a mother Dane with a 3 year old laying on top of her. They are the sweetest dogs ever. My boyfriend is out of town and I was thinking about having one for protection. No one would ever break in with a dog like that. I love dogs that are so loveable like a Dane. Does anyone have one? |

Posted over 5 years ago I haven't personally owned a great dane, but have very fond memories of a Harlequin named Domino. He was the gentlest soul and not a good watch dog. From the beginning, because of their size and strength, you need to well train them, so I would suggest you immediately enroll your new pup in obediance training.

Posted over 5 years ago Thanks! We don't have one yet, but we are thinking about down the road. They are huge dogs and is going to be a handful, but I sure would feel safe with one of those around.

Posted about 5 years ago lizbaby75tn said: You can do research in the akc site for dogs, they give you a good idea of the dogs ways. Make sure when you pick your breed of dog that they will match any of your future plans. (children). Some dogs are just no match with kids even if they are raised around them. so my advise is do your research!! I have had a lot of different kinds of dogs through my time, I am a sucker for animals who need a home. I take them untill I can find them a home. Mainly dogs. I have never had a great dane and don't know much about them but my girlfriends dad breeds them and has about 8 of them and from what ive seen they are very loving and protective and yes i can say his are good with kids. proper training is very important with any type of dog. some people have a bad outlook on obiendence training but not only do they need it, you do as well. There are also books you can get on the breed that will teach you how to train your dog yourself. These are very good but patients is the key word!!! good luck!

Posted about 5 years ago Word of warning: Great Danes like most large breeds have a tendancy to live shorter lives. My friend's dane has been fantastic with his new son and 3 year old....very tolerant!

Posted about 5 years ago I have a girl that lives in our apartment complex, she has two. They are both very sweet. One is all white, he is deaf, but he is a great dog. My husband and I thought about getting one.....but right now we don't have the space. I think they are gentle giants......and you are right they are soooo cute as puppies.

Posted about 5 years ago We have to two danes and they are wonderful dogs. They are large dogs and if you are used to smaller dogs they take a bit of getting used to. The two I have are 2 years old now and are starting to mellow out. I will have to post some pictures... you can't help but love them.

Posted about 5 years ago I agree with Kayakrn7... the reason I wouldn't get a Great Dane is for the mere fact they do have a tendency to live shorter lives. Great Danes, however are big babies!!! I don't know if NavyWife12 knows this, but most times, all white great danes are deaf. I usually opt for dogs that are around the 55-60 lb. range. I have a lab/chow/husky mix that is about 9, and this crazy border collie. Not only do I like the border collie breed, they have a pretty good life span of about 12-14 years. Shamrock is going on 4 years old now, but he'll be around a long time...only I wish he would quit jumping the fence for fun...lol.

Posted about 5 years ago I am going to have to disagree. While Great Dane's to have a shorter life expectancy, they are loving and intelligent dogs. Any extra large breed is going to have a shorter life expectancy and I'm not sure that should even thought of as an issue. Danes are actually pretty lazy around the house and wonderfully active outside-a great balance. I think they are a terrific choice!

Posted about 5 years ago I didn't mean to imply that they were not great dogs, it's just that I get so attached to my dogs, the possibility of losing a dog sooner would just kill my soul is all. I had a friend that had one, and he was the best thing ever! He passed away at 6 years old. It hurt all of us when he went on.

Posted about 5 years ago I have a friend of mine that has 2 great danes. She loves them and they are great with her kids. They do eat A LOT and need a lot of space to run and play.

Posted about 5 years ago Yeah, my boyfriend has had them before and loves them. I know they live short lives and even though it would kill me, I still would like to have one. Another reason is I would feel safe when I go out and walk. No one would mess with me with that dog around. And no one would break in the house if they knew I had one. It's not only that. I think they are so sweet. I am not going to have any kids so that isn't even an issue. Yes they are big, but that doesn't bother me. And for obedience I definately would train them. I watch the dog whisperer all the time.

Posted almost 5 years ago Do youself a favor go to a reputable breeder. The way you find one is by going on to the Great Dane Dog Club of America web site they should have a list of breeders. Tell the breeder you want pet quallity ask if they are a signer of the breeder code of ethics and you can check the with the GDDCA. Ask about heart and cancer problems in the bloodlines how long do there dogs live. What kind of a contract do they offer. The reason you do this is one its worth to spend the extra money from a reputable breeder who has dogs with certified hips and elbow which this does not insure you anything its a good start. They goal is to produce the best. Many breeder participate in DNA testing that stop them from breeding when certain disease is known to be a factor. All breeds have which starts with the breed name and ends with Dog Club of America. Signing the breeders code permits you to turn them into the AKC & there Parent club and they can be suspended. Just food for thought.
