Hi phaile - thanks for the post! Hopefully someone will be able to help you. What state do you live in? I know that so many of the lvn/exam requirements depend on the state you live in.

Here in Texas, you have to attend and pass a state approved licensed vocational nursing program in order to even apply for the boards. There is no "challenging" as such here.

Here in Oklahoma, I had some of my Nursing school classmates challenge the LPN boards after our 3rd semester. There is no challenging for cna's or AUA's.

I am doing the method three CNA to LVN in the state of California. I have been a CNA for almost 9 years. In the state of California, you must to have 51 months experience in an acute hospital. 200 hours in Pediatrics, 200 hours in Genitonary or Maternaty and 64 hour in any of these area. The rest of the hours have to be in Medsurgical. You also need sterile technique and catherization and 54 hours of Pharmacology which comes out to be 1.8 months, and you can summit your CNA Certificate and if you have experience in Geriatric, the board of nursing will accept 8 months included towards your Medsurgical. Summit your High school transcripts along with your application seal in business envelopes and Live finger prints also. You can download a LVN licence application from the boards of nursing home page. www.boardsofnursing.com. The method three LVN licence is only good for the state of California.

I am a proud mother of three beautyful daughter. I currently live in Los Angeles California. I've worked as a heathecare provider for almost 10 years. I am curently in school to pursue my MSN in nursing, and wants to work as a pediactric nurse, in public health.

Thanks for the detailed information cuttie. Again, it seems to differ greatly from state to state. Does anyone live in a state where a CNA challenge is possible? Is the process that cuttie described regarding California similar to what others have experienced in other states?

I don't think it's possible in Pennsylvania. We tend to be kind of tough about that kind of stuff here, but I'm not a CNA , so I wouldn't be the best person to ask.

The only reason why I'm doing this method is because I have took classes for my RN, and I am in the process of applying for RN school. I have been a CNA for almost 9years, but I have been in school part-time over these 9years. I took my CNA at Los Angeles Trade Technical College. I started taking other classes for my Associates Degree in Liberal Arts. Originially, I was a computer major. I did the CNA program, just to see if I liked nursing. I didn't like nursing at first, especially working as a CNA. So I went back to computer school to get my computer operator degree, and years later, I went back to school to finish my preriquisitesfor my Rn degree. When I left College the first time , I finished some of the Co-prequisites, so when I returned back to college, I only concentrated on the preriquistes in English, Math, and my Science classes.

That sounds like a great strategy cuttie. I have a niece who want to make the same change you made. What suggestions do you have for the prospective nurses who are making the same suggestions? What has been your strategy for taking the prerequisites while you are working full-time?

NevadaRN- I would tell your niece to make sure that she gets into a program that is relatively short in length, so that she can get into the job market fast. There are so many jobs out there right now.

MILLICENTPIS, here in Georgia we have the HOPE. It pays approximately 90% of all cost relating to schooling, no living expenses. There are govt and private grants. The Pell Grant is one. And you might try to research what your present employer would require if they sent you to school. Might have to commit to a couple of years employment as a nurse to them. Please excuse the typos. Not enough coffee at 7am. Physical today. Wish me luck!

Since the OP used the term LVN in the title of the thread, assume they are in CA or TX.  I used method 3 to take the LVN boards in CA.  It was a matter of filling out the application, getting the certification of the experience and education, and taking the NCLEX once my application was approved.  It was delayed because one of my employers stated they had no idea who I was and I had to use another reference.  It is not an easy process, but it can be done in CA.
