This question may seem a little crazy, but... Generally speaking, I only wear skirts. Whether in nursing school or employed at a hospital, Is it mandatory for nurses to wear pants or is skirts ever an option? I will be entering nursing school in January, and I am just trying to get an idea of what will be required.

no it's not mandatory to wear slacks, but when you're bending, lifting moving around as a nurse does, your modesty can be compromised. Also slacks protect your legs from contaminants

kd, dmaz is right, it's not mandatory to wear pants but it is strongly discouraged to wear a dress, very few nurses wear dresses, it's more for nostalgia than practical. If you do really want to wear a dress check out the U.S. Navy female uniform dresses, a good winter grade pantyhose will provide adequate protection for your modesty. Good luck.

We have a couple of nurses who wear skirts in our department, but it's part of their faith.

I'm sure skirts aren't against dress code, but I would imagine that some of the more physical aspects of the job would make a skirt impractical. Personally, I don't wear them because I don't like to shave my legs, HA!

I only wore dresses until 1995. I could climb all over in them, I was younger then. It was real nursey to wear the white dress and white nylons. Once I started wearing pants I've never worn another dress, probably a good thing. You don't see many dresses these days. The day of the dress and caps are gone :(

I haven't seen a nurse in a dress in years and years. I guess you could of you wanted to but with all the bending and reaching, pants are much better and more comfortable. I haven't worn a nursing dress since nursing school 27 years ago!

I have to say that today I had a chance to meet and talk to someone who only wears dresses and has to have her head covered when outside her home because of religious believes. She tells me that she wears spandex (cyclist type) or sweats, or shorts and even sometimes pants and then puts a dress over them, not so stylish, but as long as the dress is the most outer garment, there should be no problem.

From the nursing schools that I have looked into, and the one I will be starting at in the fall - skirts appear to be an option since some students will only wear skirts because of religious convictions. The one thing that you will need to keep in mind regarding the skirt, is at least at school you will not be able to just wear anything under it. At my school our skirts (if you choose to wear a skirt) must be accompanied by stockings or tights in white with white shoes. So just make sure when you are picking up your skirt you check on the stocking requirements. This is different since our pants are to be accompanied by navy socks and navy shoes.

The second thing that I noticed with the skirt, is often the uniform in nursing school skirts do not have pockets. Yet, interestingly the uniform pants have all sorts of pockets. I am told that if you wear the skirt, you can get a specified nurses fanny pack (again according to school regulation colors) to wear to make up for the no pockets.

I just heard on the news last night the nurses in Spain are required to wear "mini skirts" as part of their uniforms. They do not like them to wear pants and are paid more for wearing skirts. It was on the nightly news. How about that for no rights for nurses!!!

It sounds like they still have a choice. They can choose to wear pants or a mini skirt. I know which one I'd choose.

for some men it's a fetish, white skirts, hose, shoes (nurse in general) I wear a flight suit 90% of the time, but if I'm doing my ED tour, required once a month, to tease some of the guys I know have this "problem" I will deck out in full whites. My GF's mom, rest her soul, was an RN for 50 + years, her old school ways were impressive and strict. It was always my luck when I saw her I was in the dress whites. LOL I've even been known to wear my cap.

when you stroke your friends, they all feel better,,,,,,
when your friend HAS a stroke, we all feel worse.

What about wearing a cotton skirt with a regular scrub top? Is that generally allowed or is it all or nothing?

I don't think you can wear any old skirt with your uniform I believe it has to be a uniform skirt. When I was buying patterns to make my scrubs I found one that has a dress pattern as well. Check with you uniform shop to see if they sell skirts.

I have yet to see a scrub skirt in a shop. Not really interested in wearing one of those white dresses. In the past, I have made some scrub skirts from sewing patterns out of the same material that scrubs are made out of. Wondering if this would be allowed?

There are a few women who wear skirts(not mini skirts). It is part of their religion also. There should be no problem with you wearing a skirt.

My nursing school has us wearing a pant and scrub shirt uniform. I heard that the uniform for "graduation" will be a skirt and blouse, but they are changing that to a pant suit.

I would think women would feel more comfortable in the pants instead of the skirt anyway.

Most nursing schools have a certain dress critera that you will follow so I would ask the instructor what is required.  As far as in the field once you finish, I suggest you were what is comfortable for you.

"scrub" dresses with multiple pockets in white or colors are available( if you choose white get a slip!!) opaque white hose will also be a must. If you are already practiced in bending, crouching leaning etc in a skirt it can be done (we did it before pants were an option)

skirts or slacks is your decision.  Employeer can only mandate the "scrub" and can even dictate specific colors.  Do what you want.  I won't wear skirts d/t all the moving I do.  I even wear a tee under my tops as a golden rule since I had a resident tear mine in clinicals once and only once.  Thank god that day I was cold and wore a tee underneith.  lesson learned.

geez........I'm thinking about body mechanics in a skirt.   It's doable, although if I have to dive for a possible fall risk patient, I make no promises that it wont be an ugly sight, hehe.  Does liability insurance cover possible death to bystanders as a result of shock brought on by an ugly ass being shown?  Brittany Spears can get away with it, I dont think I could.

If you really want to wear a skirt, what about culottes?  You know a split skirt, looks like a skirt, but is wide, and is actually a type of pants, but short, like a skirt.   Do they still make such an item?  Or am I dating myself?  LOL!  Check with the uniform shops or or online.

I think however that you will find that pants and a shirt are the most comfortable way to work.  Best of success!

To Paddymac:   I havent seen cullottes in uniform stores.  There is a lady I work with who wears them, I think she makes them herself.  Personally, I think they look dorky.........sorry!

I agree that culottes look dorky!  but if someone really wants to wear a skirt  t to work in, at least with a culotte they wont be showing off all of their "goods", LOL!  I always wear scrub pants and a scrub top.

It's not mandatory & one of reason is that patients' also like to see with that uniform. People's mentality is treated like this that it's look more professional according to that job :)
