Is there a law reguarding how many residents are assigned to a CNA? I have had as many as 17 residents assigned to me and between myself and the 2 ohter aids, it was an equal amount between all of us. There were 2 RN's on duty as well, but they don't help out with anything. Is this common or am I just being naive. I have only been a cna for 3 months.

I'm not sure about the legal specifics, but I would imagine that it depends on what state you call home. Where are you from Angie_ri78?

Illinois, in a long term nursing facility. We have complained to the DON and she will send a 4 person but only after nagging her. This lightens our load to about 11 residents per aid. When it is only 3 aids working, it is impossible to give adequite care.

I believe it. In Nevada it is pretty bad at nursing homes too. Probably not quite as bad as it is back east, but it's getting there. With more and more boomers (myself included) crossing the bridge into their 60s this is going to become a dire problem nationwide.

I am doubting that there is legislation regarding the ratio of unlicensed personnel to patients. Especially since you don't see to much regarding RN's and LPN's. At least in our state.

I don't know of any regulations in place, though there probably should be... Last week someone never showed up for work on my shift, and there was only me and one other CNA to cover 42 residents. Fortunately, we have wonderful nurses, and they were more than willing to help out as much as they could. They've got a lot of work to do themselves, they certainly don't to nothing... It's not possible for them to be on the floor helping us the whole time, but they always jump in to do whatever they can.
