One of the first successful reattachments of a hand, which a psychotic patient with the aid of piece of broken glass, very neatly disarticulated his hand from his arm, at the wrist. 29 hours the surgery lasted. This by the way, was in 1983

One time that stands out was on the neuro unit. I heard a noise, thinking it was a pt out of bed, I went looking in that direction. I went past a room and heard Pssssttt, "I think something just fell out of my head." This was a kid with a C1-C2 fracture in gardner-well tongs to traction on a stryker frame. Sure enough the the tongs came out of his head. We were actually rounding up staff to go help turn him, I just get chills still thinking that they may have come out in the middle of a turn. We called the neuro surgeon and he was just starting emergency surgery at another hospital. So we were told to sand bag his head, NO moving, NO sneezing or coughing and pray. He made it ok, the dr got there a few hours later and replaced them. It was a tension packed shift.
