It will probably have a formaldehyde smell which preserves the body. I don't consider it gross but interesting. I don't know if you will get nauseated. I hope you don't but if you do it is ok. I have been a nurse for 13 years and don't like OB at all-I get sick feeling when around Labor and Delivery or just talking about it.

I got to see one last year. It is not that bad, I was absolutely fascinated by it because I got to see the real thing and not just a picture in a book. It will really help because you can apply and see first hand how muscles, tendons, the heart, etc. Some people get a little nauseous, but try not to look at it as a dead body. This was a person that donated their body for scientific purposes and understood that he or she would be studied. Good luck!

Okay.. well I'm just like ew! Everytime someone mentions it and we have to bring gloves next week which means we'll probably be touching it! My teacher was so happy though because it was a skinny person and not the fat person she said she had for last semester!

A dab of vicks in the nostrils helps with the odor!

It is a great learning opportunity to see what you learn in the books. Most teachers do not require you to touch the body, but to bring gloves if you want the hands on. Just take it slow.

You're lucky. When I was in A&P we only got to dissect cats. I found it was OK as long as I didn't look into it's eyes! One girl did pass out and the teacher just laughed because he said that someone does every semester. Turns out she was pregnant and the formaldehyde smell got to her. I wanted to tell my teacher to stick it when he laughed. I learned a lot from him but he didn't have what you would call a "good bedside manner".

I don't know if having a cadaver is good or not. All we got to use was a cat. I think the smell of the formaldehyde was bad, but after two weeks the cat was pretty rank. Not much you could do about it but just bear it.

I think that would be neat, our A&P class was going to use a cadaver.....unfortunately I was taking that class about the time 9/11 happened, so the cadaver never happened. We ended up using a cat. Good luck, I am excited for you. This is a great learning expierence. I heard one of my Docs talking about a CME seminar he had to go to that used cadavers and he said it wasn't too bad!

Take advantage of the opportunity - it's one that not everybody gets. I've had to get my hands on, or eyes on - whichever the case is, by working in the ED when a trauma came in, or when I've scrubbed in the OR with a doc who was willing to teach. As for the smell, you can use vicks, but really, you'll probably get used to it.

The cat smell is alot worse than a cadaver. There is some smell but near as strong as the cat's. I got to use them as well when we did muscles, but two went bad and had to be thrown out after a couple of weeks. Now that was a smell I would rather forget! lol

Well I have yet to reach this part of my A&P requirements, but I am looking forward to it. I have had exposure in video format of a cadaver disection for MA school and found it quite facinating to coordinate what we learn form a drawing in a book to the real think. I feel it helped a few things "click" as to the overall picture of the "how / whys". As others have said you may do better if you take it a little at a time, just stay focused on a small area at first (ex: the muscle fibers). My biggest thing is.. Make sure the face is covered !! At that point it is not a person -its an object of study. Stay focused, and embrace the opportunity for the educational aspect. I would think the same for having the opportunity to view an operation for the first time....

The cadaver wasn't as bad as I thought I was.. it was interesting and it turns out that we are going to have to identify 30 muscles off of it for our muscle test tommorow, so I'm thinking about going in today w/ a friend to study! I'm still not sure though, but I will definately if she wants to!

I was freaked out and nervous as all heck when I had to dissect a cat. Well it was actually pretty cool to see all the parts and to be able to name then. Smells are something to get used to, which as a nurse you will smell many non pleasant things. I believe the worst smell is emtying a colostomy bag (when someone has their poop go into a bag on their abdomen) But a cadaver when i did get to see one, the only thing that disturbed me is the tattoo this man had, it made me remember that he was once alive and now i'm digging through him...you'll be fine, its really neat. Not many people can say they know what the inside of a human body looks like.

I didn't get sick at all. I was used to smell, when we had to dissect other animals in A'P and biology 36 a preri to the A'P. I loved it. The cadavor we saw was a rich Corporate Tycoon, who donated his body to science. He was a chronic smoker, drinker, who had a previous heart operations. He eventually died from lung cancer. The class, and I had to write a report about the different organs, we saw, and write a lab report, on his organs conditions, and come up with a conclusion, on what he might of died from. It was great, you will have fun, if you are use to smell. Good Luck!!!

In A/P I...We did a lamb's brain.  A human eyeball.  human heart.  But they were all seperate.  I didn't get to do a complete cadaver.  I worry about the same thing myself.  I will be taking A/P II this summer, and yes....it will smell bad.   Just gotta' suck it up.  Good luck .  You will be fine!

I think it would be interesting and you'll do fine! We had cats in our class. The formaldehyde is strong. I was interested in it so it didn't bother me

I've never dealt with a human cadaver, but I've been around horse cadavers, and my recommendation would be to have one specific pair of scrubs/clothes that you wear to that class every time, and that you aren't bothered tossing at the end of the semester. I smell really sticks to your clothes, so if you wear the same thing every time, you don't have to worry about a bunch of stinky things...just one!

When I was in LPN school we did have human cadavers and it was okay I guess. I didn't know what to expect at first neither. Depends on how strong of a stomach you have and how well preserved they have kept it. The one we had was quite old and we got to handle all the parts of the body and take them out and pass them around. HEHE..is this grossing you out yet..:). I'm sure you will do fine. It really is quite interesting if you think of it in that way, and not just a dead body that someone donated to science. One thing I was not expecting was the odd color of the skin and the texture and firmness of the insides. Just think of it as a positive experience.

I took A&P I and II and never got to see a cadaver either, I think it would be so cool. In my A&P II class we had fetal pigs and the smell was bad. We had them in there for the last half of the class and the room smelled so awful! Thats because we had them in there for awhile and taking the final was torture becasue the pigs were set out for some of the test. lol I think you will be fine though, it won't be that bad hun. Just don't think of it as a real body, think of it as a good model.
