Ok, this is kinda long, but I REALLY need help...So I just graduated nursing school in December, and I finally moved out to New Hampshire to be with my husband, who is in the Navy. We have been apart the whole time I was in school in California (where we are originally from). The trouble is, we are moving back to California this December because that is his discharge date from the Navy, and after six years of service, he is very anxious to start college (which is cheaper in California because he is a resident, so it's important that we move back). Because of this situation and me being a new grad and all, I have already been denied a job at two hospitals!! I even offered to forfeit pay during the orientation period, and they still said no! I am getting really frustrated, because basically I am being given only two choices: Either don't use my license, that I worked so hard for, for a year, or leave my husband again to go back to California to start my career. It's so frustrating and very discouraging, and any advice anyone could give me would be awesome!! Thanks!

Ok, your mistake is telling them you'll only be there for a short period of time. They don't need to know this, because plans can change. Basically what has happened is they don't want to put all the time, money and effort into hiring you, orienting you and then you leave in less than a year. Even if you are not paid during your orientation, it still costs the hospital money they don't want to pay if you aren't going to stay. Am I saying lie? No, I'm saying don't give them information about future plans, which very possibly can change.

Unfortunatley the decision not to hire you is based on basic business principles- the cost of the hiring process, the cost of orientation, the length of orientation, the cost of perceptoring can run into the tens of thousands and this is a high price to pay for an employee you know will be leaving in less than 9 months...hope this doesn't discourage you but it is the reality.

Thanks for your advice. I do understand that it costs the hospitals a lot of money to put a new grad through orientation, which is why I was willing to forfeit pay. I also realize that they are still paying a lot of money even if I do this, however, they are also getting my services for free, which does put a little money back in their pockets. My main goal isn't to earn money, it's to start practicing as a nurse. I guess the advice to just not tell the hospitals is best if I want to start my career. I feel bad doing it, but if it's the only way, I don't know what else to do.

I would have to agree with everyone else, do not state that you may possibly be moving in the next year. Also you may want to check out hospitals or other facilities that have other facilities all over the US. Then all you would have to do is transfer from one facility to the other. Your husband may have to move there first and get everything set up while you finish up preceptorship and then back to the sun! Good luck!

I agree with everyone. You never know what can happen in one year's time. Plans can change. Don't tell about moving back until it's time for you to do it. Also, find out how much notice you have to give. I didn't realize with my job description that I'm required to give 4 weeks notice instead of 2. Get your nursing career going and take things one step at a time. Good Luck!!

Did you have your license switched over? Because a lot of times its a matter of legalities also. they want you to be licensed in the state you are working.

I know that you feel bad about not disclosing your future plans about moving to those potential employers but you will not have to withhold this information by taking this route and contacting some of the Nurse Temp. Agency and Nurse Registry they are very flexible and will work with your schedule. Good Luck!!!!!!!!
