I read an article stating that our children are getting bigger as the generations go by. I think it is lack of exercise that causes most of this. Our children are buying video games for their Nintendo-DS's, watching tons of television, and just being lazy. my husband and I recently had our cable disconnected to help solve the problem. We bought 40 bucks worth of paint brushes, paint, and canvases....so our kids can paint! They love it, and it keeps them from sitting in front of the television. Try it!

I agree kids are very sedentary today. They sit in front of a computer, tv, video games and have no other interests. Another problem is their diet, fast foods, pre processed foods, eating while watching tv, playing games or on the computer. Rarely do I hear of families sitting down together at dinner time.

I played a LOT of video games as a kid, and still do. Although they're certainly a contribution to our girthy children, I think the food we give our kids is the biggest problem. I work at an elementary school, and a lot of my kids tell me that at home they eat nothing but fast food, and they drink lots of soda and sweetened fruit juice. No wonder they're always out of it!

In America, it is not unusual for girls to hit puberty at 11,12,13, and this is frequently attributed to the bovine growth hormones in all the dairy and meat products we eat. I ate very limited dairy as a child and didn't hit puberty until 17. I never ate fast food and, as such, I hardly ever eat it in adulthood and have had no problem keeping a healthy weight even when I'm not exercising a lot.

It's all about parents establishing good habits in their children from a very early age.

I have to say that I agree with what you're saying margaritka. I was appalled to learn that my step-daughter's high school offers fast food lunch options!!! One is a pizza joint, and the other is Subway...now granted the Subway isn't as bad, but c'mon! There are soda machines, and fruit "juice" machines (more like flavored high fructose corn syrup) readily available. Kids are not only suffering from obesity, but a number of weight and diet related issues as well. Diabetes incidence is increasing, elevated cholesterol, and elevated blood pressure are just a few. I make sure that my kids stay involved in physical activities of one kind or another, we eat healthy, well-balanced, home-prepared meals (most of the time - when Dad's not cooking...LOL!) and their TV watching is limited.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, worn out and screaming "Woo-hoo"!!!

For children, martial arts could be a possibility for helping with this concern. It can be a great way to burn off the calories, great cardio, strength, concentration/focus skills enhancement, and a venting method. If mom and dad are able, it is a good way to bond with your children/grandchildren. There are many places to go to and it is fairly inexpensive compared to most physical activities along with a lifetime of skills.
