Posted about 5 years ago I've been a nurse for over 30 years and I think being a CNA is hard work, takes great patience and understanding. It is also a position, I feel is under paid and under appreciated. It's also a great place to start to figure out if you wish to stay in the healthcare community. There is no shame if you wish to stay a CNA or to advance your education and go to either LPN or RN. Whatever you do, don't give up your dreams

Posted about 5 years ago CNAs are definitely under paid. I cannot believe the starting pay is between $10 & $12 in California, for taking care of people. Unbelievable. Not everyone can do a CNA's job. He!! - people who work at the fast-food joints make the same amount of money as CNAs. The pay seriously needs to be re-evaluated.

Posted about 5 years ago Believe it or not....years ago when I was a CNA or actually in NC at the time there was no certifications. I had 2 weeks OJT at a local nursing home and was given the title of Nurse's Assistant. I started out at $5.00/hr. Definately not nearly enough for the work I did. Now I think our CNA's are around $12 or $13 per hour depending on where yo work.

Posted about 5 years ago Same here, you were not required to be certified til the late 80's, early 90's. Starting pay for me was $5.15 an hour. Hard to believe how things have changed and the pay rate is better, but needs to be re-evaluated again, considering what we do now.

Posted about 5 years ago I am an MA, and a Nursing Student...If there is one thing I've learned, its that CNAs work their butts off, rarely get thanked and still come back the next day for more....I think as a person coming from a part of the nursing field that can sometimes be at odds with RNs I have adopted this philosphy for when I become a nurse... "I cant do my job with out my CNAs, MAs, etc...These people make my life easier and are EXTREMELY VALUABLE to me" (I just finished my first nursing school clinical rotation at a Veterans Hospital...There were no CNAs there, I now have a new and better appreciation for the work you do!) And as far as wanting to be a nurse and not having support from RNs...An RN i work with (she, like Dmazment, has been a nurse for 30 years) told me, people who dont support you are jealous and scared you are going to take their place, YOU are the younger, new and improved version of them and that scares them!... SO keep your chin up and go get your RN!!!

Posted about 5 years ago I couldn't believe what I first started off making as a CNA back in 1999, all the hard work, and studying to make only $6.20 a hour. I started working in a convalescent home on the 3to11 shift. The work was so hard. When I left working there, I had developed tintinitis in my right arm, from lifting patients all day. In convalescent homes, the CNA's don't have any help from the nurse, you have to ask another CNA for help, and you have to help other AIDES with lifting there patients. I use to have the Physical Therapist working there, message my back and arms, I was in pain all the time. I encourage all CNA's to continue their education in nursing, it will pay off in the future. I am a proud mother of three beautyful daughter. I currently live in Los Angeles California. I've worked as a heathecare provider for almost 10 years. I am curently in school to pursue my MSN in nursing, and wants to work as a pediactric nurse, in public health.

Posted about 5 years ago I agree that CNAs are underpaid....if there is a requirement for certification, and you are working as part of the health care team, then your compensation should reflect that....I am always sure to try to get to know CNAs/PCAs because, let's face it.....without these critical support staff, nurses would have much BIGGER headaches!!! I truly believe that you can tell alot about someone's personality by how they treat others....and thusfar, I am happy that I see the CNAs where I work being treated well by other members of the health care team....I certainly would support pay increases for all of their hard work!

Posted about 5 years ago I have worked as a cna for 10 yrs. When i first began in this field i absolutely loved it! I have worked in several areas and found working with the elderly is most rewarding for me. It is easy to become complacent in this field. But i rethink things and wonder how many other jobs can you do and feel good about what you did at the end of the day. I am now going to start college for my nursing degree (this will be my second time...dont let other things distract you) and i heard all the discouraging things you have heard. Just remember in the end what a rewarding job nursing is and how you will never have to worry about finding a job in this field. Plus there are so many different fields of nursing and you can get a job anywhere. Good luck with nursing if that is what you decide. You wont be dissappointed.

Posted about 5 years ago I just started at the nursing home I am at, as CNA and I am in New Jersey, and am making $8.25 per hour, plus have to pay for my benifits out of my check. Also paid holidays, time off days earned etc. As pool, I'd make $14.00 but nothing more than a paycheck. Which would you choose? Currently enrolling in College to gear towards RN.

Posted about 5 years ago I am a cna in Michigan. I am working "agency" right now. I make between $10.00 and $14.00 per hour depending on the client. The only thing with this situation is that you really don't know how many days a week you will be working. You are kind of on-call. Some days are pre-scheduled but mostly you are called in at the last minute. Some weeks I only get 1 or 2 days of work. I was just offered a job for $8.67 per hour but medical/dental benifits are included. I will end up taking this after tomorrow (when I take my pre-employment physical/drug screen). I hate to work for so little but at least its steady income. I am not taking any pre-reqs for the nursing program this summer. I will start back up in the fall. CNA's are one of the hardest workers in the health field and probably the lowest paid. But it is the most gratifying/daily rewarding/ and satisfing job I have ever done. I would not give up working in the health care field for anything.

Posted about 5 years ago SunnieDay said: you are so correct im a state tested nusring assistant in ohio and yes we are underpaid and not liked at all. but ... the reason being not everyone can be trusted to work on there own and not be babysat. being said... now we all are treated like crap because of the ones that cant due there job correct in the first place.... and i really think that some nurse's let it go to there heads that they are a charge nurse over us and that is a shame as well because we are one in healthcare and need to remain that way ... everyone has there own job to due and teamwork is very important to me and should be to everyone. but,,,, im dreaming right. well i just wish we could all be on the same page in nursing for the patients. they need us in everyway but corps and government look at them as just a number. hmmmmm

Posted over 4 years ago I have had so many nurses say discouraging things when I say that I am in nursing school. I even asked do you have any advice for me, she didn't look up from her med cart and dryly slurred "yeah, don't do it". Then I have a few egotistical dare I say it LPN's who actually said "stay a CNA, it's too much work and you won't make it". Well I just left that j o b to move and I just couldn't help it, I went back to ask them to clarify it "she said, you are one of the best, you are my strength, my right arm, and I just didn't want to lose you, I wanted to keep you my CNA". Now I just don't listen to them, find my CNA Angels and exchange text books, notes, flash cards and tickles about who the Kewl professors are in the parking lot. YOU GO GIRLFRIEND, GET THAT NURSING DEGREE We are all coming to your graduation with WINGS and Halo's on. Admiring the Struggle it takes to be Human
