Dunno if this helps or not but here in Florida there's talk of requiring that a pregnant woman be given an ultrasound and shown the picture of her baby before she can have an abortion ...

The ethical question is does this violate, or come close to, patient privacy rights - are we performing a procedure without the patient's consent? Might be an interesting discussion.

Back a couple of years ago in Florida, you may have heard about the Schivo story, where she didn't have a living will, and had a stroke, and her husband wanted to take her off of life support, but her family didn't want her to be taken off. I think that would be a good topic....Also when a DNR order has been written, you still need to give the best possible care. I know of some people that wouldn't even put moisturizing lip balm on a patient because it was hydrating them.

What about the ethical dilema of caring for/treating someone you know...ie..friend, ex, etc...? could you? would you? would it change your nursing decisions?
