I am from West Kentucky where the only things that are unionized seem to be the manufacturing plants. I can see why certain states want to have unionized nursing, but what would be the benefits? I actually had never heard of unionized nursing until I did some job searches out in California.

The benefits are a united voice. Your employer can't fire you without just, documented cause. Changing of nurse to patient ratio to reasonable and safe levels. Professional treatment of nurses. The forced implementation of quality safety standards. Better wages, benefits and retirements. The list goes on........

Oh, okay....I was unclear......Thanks for clearing it up....I hear you there......I was a C.N.A. at a nursing home for 2 1/2 years, and had to constantly battle with working short handed......At one time, I had to take care of 32 bed ridden patients at one time.

I don't like unions in healthcare because I feel it is morally wrong for nurses to go on strike, the patients suffer during a strike/ I worked at a union hospital for a short time and i told them from the start that I would not strike that I would cross the picket line because the patients should comefirst.

this is why, nurses do not have a strong bargaining position across the US. This is why hospitals and physicians can continually treat nurses so very unprofessionally. BECAUSE nurses do not stand united.

I think it all depends on where you work as to how you are treated. I work in a teaching hospital and the nurses are treated with respect and are even relied upon to help the new doctors in making decisions. We are treated very professionally and I think I am treated better here then I was at the union hospital. I hated every minute at the union hospital the nures took advantage of the fact that they were union to not do their job. Come time to punch out they were all at the clock whether their work was done or not. They ate their young and did not work as a team at all. The doctors were rude to us and got away with it.
