Hi,
I'm new here and need some advice. I had a cervical fusion for a herniated disc. Was doing just terrific, getting ready to return to work full duty and then was involved in a highway car accident (not my fault) and am now reinjured and probably not able to do bedside nursing any longer. Of course my employer has been so supportive (excuse me while I do the Heimlich on myself!!). I find myself healing, maybe contemplating surgery, not employed for much longer and looking for answers as to where to go with my career? I've been a nurse for 9 years, mostly critical care, no BSN just a diploma. Any suggestions for nursing jobs that don't require much lifting? are enjoyable? Thanks!!

I ruptured my achilles tendon. I was in a cast for about 8 months. After the cast I was in a walking boot, but not able to return to clincal nursing. When the bills started piling up, I had to go back to work. I got a job working for a health care insurance company in case management. Most hospitals also have case management. Most places want you to be certified as a case manager, but in this time of shortage they will usually allow you to get on the job training and most likely pay for the certification if you plan on continuing with that institution.
Good Luck

I am sorry for your pain and hardship. There are 2 books that I recommend that you read, the first is "Living Well with a Hidden Disability" by Stacy Taylor and the second is "Leave No Nurse Behind: Nurses working with disAbilities" by Donna Carol Maheady. Both can be found at www.amazon.com A nurse named makeupgal has started a support group for injured nurses here on Nursing Link. Also Donna Cardillo found at "Meet our Career Experts" on the home page of Nursing Link has one of the best programs out there called "Career Alternatives for Nurses". Visit her website at dcardillo.com to find out about upcoming programs or to purchase a copy of the DVD. I would like to invite you to read my story "New Purpose for an Old Career" found under "Meet Our Career Experts"--My name is Laura Wisniewski. Sincere best wishes for peace and recovery.

I am so sorry about your injury. I broke my pelvis in 4 places Feb 29-08 and am still on crutches and  still have a lot of discomfort. I have had offers from nursing homes to do MDS and they will train me, let me start part time and even offered an electric wheelchair while at work.I have a job waiting . I was to start three days after my accident. It is case management with no lifting or real direct patient care. Any hospital would LOVE to have a critical care nurse as a case manger or in UR, QA. You could really write your own ticket. If they want you to be certified they will give you the time to do it and probably pay for it. Think positive and you can find the job of your choice!!!

Wow I feel your pain.  I am a student nurse and I have two herniated disc.  I have one class left and then my capstone class.  I wanted to apply at a clinic but the ones I did said I needed bedside nursing experience.  Well I am not able to work as a nurse assistasnt right now because of my back.  (Humm I wonder how I got the herniated disc in the first place) .....  But the good thing with you you can maybe go into a clinic or something like that because you have experience.

wow...sorry to hear about your condition.  How about working as a school nurse? Not much lifting there at all.  If you continued on with your education maybe you would like to be a nursing instructor.
