My nails look like crap! Is there any news on whether or not hospitals are allowing any type of nail enhancer? I know they don't like acrylics but what about gel nails?

There is still a risk of infection (especially fungal) even with gel nails. Fungal infections such as fungemia or fungal pneumonia can be deadly to patients. There were deaths in a neonatal ICU traced back to a nurse with artificial nails. If you need more information check out the 2002 Hand Hygiene Guidelines at www.cdc.gov

I remember one day while I was shopping a sales clerk said to me, "You're a nurse aren't you?" I replied, "Yes, how did you know?" She said, "You look honest, your nails are short and your buying a white sweater."

policy where I work is short, natural nails.....we can wear polish if we like (I personally will wear polish until it chips...the minute that starts, it is off!) Better safe than sorry; I would hate to be responsible for passing on something avoidable like nail fungus to one of my patients:)
You might want to try a product called "nailtiques"...most of the salons use it....it is just a clear polish, but it strengthens nails and limits cracking and peeling...just a thought:)
