I'm sorry if this isn't supposed to be posted here so I also posted it in the Student lounge.
I am having a hard time finding the apical pulse. I know it's midclavicular and at the 5th intercostal space. Is there an easy way to find it without having to count the spaces on each person?
Thanking you in advance for your assistance.

Hope... For clinicals make sure you do as written, find the MCL and count the ic spaces! What I do in the field is, I look for the xiphoid-sternum junction and go left (patient left) three inches. Hope this helps

I'm sorry...are you talking about feeling or hearing?? You can typically hear the apical pulse in multiple areas of the left thorax.

Hey Al...I thought that was a secret! I find it the same way in the field.

Hope2b....just keep this in mind. When you're looking for the apical on a very obese pt (or large-chested women). you may not be able to find or count the IC spaces. In this case it's most helpful to follow Al's advice and DOCUMENT why you didn't follow procedure if necessary.
