One of today's featured articles discusses how many colleges and universities are trying to recruit more male nurses. I know that the number of male nurses overall has been increasing steadily over the past several decades. What is the future like for men in nursing? Do you think that the numbers will continue to increase? What effect will the overarching nursing shortage have on this?

I think there are a number of factors that will affect an increase in men becoming nurses. Number one is job security. Many men have historically had lucrative jobs with ambiguous security. As fickle as the economy and these positions have become, many will be searching for something a little more secure. Second, as the Nursing profession advances, so do the opportunities for more lucrative options. CRNA's, CNS's, NP's...etc. I can see men being attracted to this type of advancement potential. As Critical Care and Emergency Nursing becomes more advanced, I have seen more men flock to these areas vs. floor nursing. 3 of our 6 new grads this summer were men. I certainly hope the trend continues.

As a male nusing student I can say that the advancement potential that RNdude talked about was a major factor in my decision. I am interested in becoming an NP or PA in the future and hope to work as a flight nurse in the interim. I also like the idea that there is so much you can do as an RN, from surgical sales to critical care, there is no end to the diversity of the field.
