I had a comment to an article on Adrenal Gland Disorders earlier today, and I wasn't sure where to refer the questioner, so I figured that I put I'd pose it to the whole community. Does anyone know if Adrenal Gland Disorders cause increased testosterone and facial hair in women? If so , what is the specific name of this disorder?

I'm surprised it did not mention Addison's disease...the adrenal glands are underactive, resulting in a deficiency of all adrenal hormones...

And to answer your question, YES. Adrenal Gland disorders can cause an increase in testosterone and facial hair in women. There isn't really one set disease, but can be because of many underlying problems of the adrenal glands.

Now what I have been reading about recently is something called PCOS: Polycystic ovary syndrome, which is the most common cause of androgen excess.

This article is simple and has some nice diagrams.. take a look!

Also, I forgot to add... Cushing's syndrome can lead to women getting excessive facial hair growth as well.

I know that a lot of people with PCOS suffer from adrenal gland problems. You should have your doctor do a blood test for it.
