Hi everyone! I'm sara the newbie to the group and i already have a question. I wanted to know if anyone in the group has any experience with disaster preparedness? I have been given the opportunity to not only be the employee health nurse at my state facility, but now also the disaster prepardness coordinator and i don't have a clue where to start. Any comments or ideas and i would be truly greatful. Thanks so much!

Start with the State. There has to be something in the works there, and they can give you some info. There might also be grant money available for equipment you might need. You didn't say what kind of facility, but if you have a local nurses association, or public health dept they might be of assistance: also police and fire depts have gotten big into this, and need to be on board in case of evacuation needs.

I have not actually done it, but I can tell you were many fascility fail. They often times have little impromtu session right in the midst of a tough work day when the staff is already burnt to the max and they expect you to get it.Wrong wont work .Here is my humble suggestion.

Classes........... have a set scheduled time for the disaster preparedness class .........give staff enough time to prepare for the class............... have them document that they have taken the class.......................then do impromtu mock disasters.

NOte also it is imperitive that the staff know what to do in the event of a fire and there is a mapped out escape route. Also you must know where the alarms are and how to activate and who are the people to call in case of an emergency.
Also freedom must be given to any nurse who suspects a fire to call code red and she must not be penalized if any overzealous call is made but rather be gentle shown in classes with no pressures how it should be done prperly.

Want you check your local fire department. I have a friend who was a fire department prepareness instructor. You should check the facility manual, for disaster preparedness protocols, are check with the American Red Cross, they have classes, on Emergency Disaster prepareness, for Hospitals, and homes, and any other place of business.

Hey surfmom23, I teach most of the phases of my facility’s Emergency Disaster Programs... Attached is a link to a book that will help you see what a program looks like and ALL that it entails; http://www.haworthpress.com/store/PDFFiles/ForReps/Maiden-Workplace.pdf Each facility is unique so to it's hard to give advice without doing a thorough walk-through.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to drop me a line.

My friend which is a Firemen, suggest. Establish an education and awareness program for the work and home inviroment. Encourage employees to be prepared at home and work. Give each employee specific instructions as to areas of responsibility before, during, and after a disaster. He said, Establish a good safety program. Keep the employees continuously informed regarding hazards, safety warnings, emergency plans and supplies. I hoped this help!!
