To those of you determined to becoming a nurse, reading your stories has helped me to remember why I became a nurse in the first place and gives me hope for the future of nursing. I admire your dedication and drive to follow your dreams. Nursing needs your new ideas to improve healthcare. We need you!

Thanks for that. I really do hate the system we have now and seen so many people lose out on their healthcare. That is the main reason I am going into it. I want to make a diffference.

Advice from an old nurse...please be caring and compassionate. It is more than a paycheck...make it a calling.

Everyday is a gift.

Well said bpark. I use to work as an ER tech right before I started nursing school (am an EMT) and I use to see nurses be really cold and unwelcoming to some patients. The bedside manner was just way off. It almost made me change my mind and drop my application to nursing school. I know that some nurses especially in the ER hate to see repeat patients especially if they are suspected drug abusers looking for a quick fix, or hypocondriacs (did I even spell that right? ha-ha) that need to be babied, but still, its a calling. A nurse is about healing your patient physically and yes sometimes emotionally and mentally to the best of your ability. Its about health in the whole. Just my 2 cents. =)

That's exactly why I am going into nursing. No one should ever go into this kind of field for the money. It's all about the patient. If anyone is in it for the money get out now!!

I am an LPN who recently accepted a pretty sweet desk nursing job with the state about 13 months ago. I am learning new things and a whole lot about infection control and disaster awareness, infectious diseases, and politics... who could forget those. But, i have also learned that no patient contact and care has made me a very sad person inside. I have found that this is what i am here to do. I do not feel like i am whole with out being able to have patient care and being on the floor. It's really an eye opener to me. I was very burned out at my last job and swore if i could just find a nice desk job the grass would be so much greener. Now i can't wait to finish school and get back out there. I miss my patients. I miss being a nurse.

I am a nursing student and this is the exact reason I decided to go into the nursing career. I have grown up with nurses in my family and it has always been an interest. It really bugs me sometimes to know that some people are only in this career for the money. These are lives we will be caring for.
