I am interested in becoming an RN. I currently work during the day and would like to find a school where I can take classes at night, but as of now that is becoming next to impossible. I have an opportunity to take a night course to become a LVN, and I have noticed that there are LVN to RN courses that start at night. My questions are: Is it better to start out as an LVN and then take an LVN to RN course? Aren't LVN's just one small step above MA's and they don't make much money or have as many job opportunities in the field? The LVN course that I have a chance to take costs $22,000, and I just feel like if I'm spending that much money I might as well pay that for an RN program if possible, even though I haven't been able to find one. Do you have any info on where I can go to take an RN course at night?? Or would I need to start as an LVN?? I don't want to take an online course either. Thanks!!!!

I started as an LPN/LVN and eventually completed my RN. I would suggest, if you can swing it...do your RN.

If you have to spend $22,000 to become an LVN then you should just go ahead and spend the money to become and RN. Do you have a community college in your area that offers and RN program? Or even a 4 year college? A lot of places are phasing out LPN/LVN's. Well in the city that I live in anyway. I gave up my full-time day job so I could attend nursing school. I think it was worth it. But you can always find a assistant job at a local hospital. I work mainly weekends and though I took a huge paycut to become a nurse assistant the fact that I can always find a job as an RN means a lot to me. Plus I really like the field. And the hospital I work at pays some of my tuition.
