I was wondering for those who have already been accepted to a nursing program if you must have A's in A&P1, A&P2 and Chem? I am currently in A&P1 and I have a B, I have two more test over the next 3 weeks but don't think I can bring it up to an A. I haven't taken the other two yet. I just wanted to know if I need to take A&P1 again :(

You do not have to have an A in A&P. However, your GPA will make or break you. I think my school required you to have a 2.0 or 2.5 to even get into the program. I can't really remember. Of course the better your GPA the better your chances of getting into the program. It is very competive and they look at a lot of applications so they can be pretty choosy.

StarlightRN is right the better your grades are the better your chances of being accepted into the program and staying in the program! At my school you have to have a GPA of at least 2.5 and keep it that way the whole time you are in the program! It was told to me by my admissions counselor that even with a GPA of 2.5 you may not be accepted into the program, because it is so competetive. It does sound like you are off to a good start though, good luck!

The higher your GPA the better chance you have on getting accepted and you will qualify for more scholarships.

I think it depends on the schools that you apply to. Most nursing schools accept Cs and better (at least in GA). I think a B should be fine but again, check with the school that you are applying to. I just got accepted into nursing school at Emory University and they want a C or better. Hope that helps!

I personally did have As in all of my sciences, but I'm sure people get in who don't.

It was the same here in NY Karen. Once you get into the nursing school you need to hold a certain grade as well. At my school 78 is passing on the nursing exams. I am currently in Nursing II. I will graduate in the spring of 2009. Good luck to you. Study hard and you'll do fine! : )

Karen,

I agree with the others- it really depends on the school. Do you know anyone who is already in the program? They can be a great resource if you have questions. My school accepts about 100 students each track and the GPA cutoff is between 3.1-3.3.
Good luck and keep up the hard work- it sounds like you are working your butt off to do the best you can :)

I don't think an B in A&P will make or break you. In fact I got a B and I've got 2 weeks left to go before I graduate from nursing school...in other words, it didn't stop me from getting into nursing school. Get used to B's and C's if you have a family and/or plan on working. Many of my classmates were straight A students before the program and now have come to accept their B's and C's with pride (as long as they did their best).

In my experience, many community colleges go on a first-come, first-serve basis as long as you have a 2.5 GPA or higher. Universities (BSN programs) usually take students with the highest GPA & highest nursing entrance test scores. In this way, community colleges allow for students with lower GPA the same chance as those with higher GPAs. As for your grade in the main sciences, most schools require that the grade not be lower than a C.

The best advice I can give is to call your Nursing Dept and ask. They will be able to tell you everything you need to know about your schools requirements. Even better, set up an appt with a nursing adviser & have them plan out the things you need to do to get into the program. Good luck to you!!!!!

I don't think that you would have to take A&P over again if you get a B. They are all right about the GPAs as far as acceptance and scholarships but having a B won't destroy you. You should probably talk to your academic adviser or the nursing department adviser if you need the reassurance.

I'm not in the program yet, but I know that for the required nursing level A+P classes, you need a C. For the prereq chemistry classes, you need a B.

I just want to thank everyone for all the answers. I have spoke with a nursing advisor and they said that the higher your GPA the better chance you have to get in. So I will just keep going :). Thanks to all!

I was one that had a 4.0 average when I started nursing school. But now I just say to myself a B will get you a degree. I have gotten a couple A's like in one of my med surg classes, intro, and I am 2 points away from an A in peds. The other classes I have gotten B's. I just have to keep my GPA over a 3.0 so I can continue on to grad school.

You'll be fine with a B in A&P just keep your other classes at a B or better. When you get in Nursing school remember C=RN. I am finishing up my first semester of an ADN program and I only need about 35-40 on the final to pass the class but if I want my B I gotta get around 70. All of my instructors have said get your best grades early in class that way you have a little padding when clinicals roll around.

Good Luck!

Ditto. Well, not quite a 4.0 ... but I had two degrees going into the program. Now that I'm done (YAY!) my GPA is a little different. About 3/4 of the way through I started wearing a pin that said "C=RN" which should tell ya where things went. Never got the C - managed to pull B's with pride - but Nursing school isn't like any other class you've taken.

And I got a 'B' in A&P I, if I recall correctly - and was accepted into the program without a hitch. So don't sweat the petty stuff, and don't pet the sweaty stuff, and you'll be fine. :)

What helped me get an A in my science classes were those supplement books. I think they were called A&P Made Easy and Chemistry Made Easy. I still have the one for A&P and Algebra (well somewhere). And for me I was glad that I finished up the A&P classes before I took Microbiology because it kind of touched on some A&P topics and I understood what was going on.

Do you remember where you got those books from? I took microbiology before A&P and I did great in it. But A&P is so different and they cram so much info into such a small bag. But two more weeks and I am done with the first half. Thank you for your help!

Where I am, you do not have to have an A in A&P I, II... I have been accepted into the core RN program, however, I must maintain a 2.95. (3.50 now) A B is nothing to be ashamed of my dear. The only classes I have left while waiting to get into the core RN program are Microbiology, A&P I, II, as I took and passed the entrance exam back this past October. There is a waiting list for the core RN classes, and I have been assigned to the class of fall of 2011. I hear I could be moved up a year, and that's fine by me. This semester I did my last chemistry, Orangic. Glad to know those are over... and yes, I'll take that B in Organic Chemistry!!!

I bought one at Borders and the others on ebay.
