Posted over 5 years ago I am LPN with 24years varied experience. I have worked with alot of psych young people, raised 4 without the system. I have a son who has Chorea, TBI, bi-polar and substance dependence. Im presently working on my RN. My plan is to go into psych nursing and open my own home with mentally ill young adults ages 21 to 35. They have all kinds of resources for kids, elderly, not much in the way of guidance for this age population. My son also has PTSD, as did my ex husband-Vietnam Viet-marine. Im also a member of NAMI. Psych nursing Im finding is a wide open field and very rewarding. The system is very flustrating to me at this point. Im just wondering if the road blocks Im finding exsist every where, how we as nurses can help be positive to effect change to make it better. Thanks

Posted over 5 years ago I love Psych! I love the patients. I work with a team that consists of 3 social workers, an MD and myself that see clients on a weekly basis and I also on the Crisis team and do emergency screenings out in the community to get people into services with us. It is an awesome experience and you get to see tons of things and I get to see my patients from a crisis state to a functioning member of society!

Posted about 5 years ago I have been working in an acute care psych inpatient unit with a reputation for doing great things for people. I Love it there. I also love seeing a patient come into our facility in an out of control pcychotic state and leave functioning. It is sooo awesome. I guess there are not many psych nurses out there .........................

Posted about 5 years ago I have worked psych off and on, really my favorite part of nursing. currently I am working at a non-profit detox unit and an in-pt acute psych floor in a for profit hospital. BIG difference, but very interesting. Hey congress just passed a bill psych diagnosis will be paid for same as physical, big changes comming. They will have to haggle about details. It is about past time as all the state places were closed ~15-20 years ago.

Posted almost 5 years ago That's great news Kat88. I am not an RN yet but I will be finishing up my second semester in '09. I plan on going into mental health nursing. I want to work with the children. I just feel it would be an honor to work with these kids for a living.
