Posted about 5 years ago One day I plan to move to Florida and work in a hospital there. I know a little about reciprocity (but admittedly, not much) and have been researching hospitals there. Can anyone give me any tips on the best way to go about this? It's a couple of years away yet, but I hate leaving anything to chance. Any comments would be appreciated.

Posted about 5 years ago You simply apply to the state board of nursing in Florida for a license by endorsement. Florida is one of the very few states giving you a 90 day work permit to practice nursing while awaiting your permanent license. This permit can take 4-6 weeks to arrive, so I'd advise you to start the process at least two months before you plan to move, so you'd have your permit to practice in your hands before you move, to avoid mail forwarding and subsequent loss of permit or license

Posted about 5 years ago In terms of healthcare I can personall say that florida has reached a level of distinction in nursing. The standards are of the highest level and there expectation of nursing is no less. This however at times can be tremendously strainuos and many a nurse have quit because tthey just cant go on any more because ofthe demands but the reason for this is to protect the patient. Which is excellent. My one wish though is that they develop a universal code of conduct for all the fascilities staff and administrators. I personall have had to resign a few jobs because i was disastisfied with the conduct of some staff towards each other and then there are those facility were the staff are just superb. But overall the expectation is to the highest level and being that I am a person of integrity that please me very much.

Posted about 5 years ago Thank you very much for the responses. I assume I don't have to challenge their state boards?

Posted about 5 years ago No You simply have to pass your boards, stay in good standing with the nursing board ie no marks against your license, apply for your license and pay the fees and do what ever continuing education may be required

Posted about 5 years ago When you are ready to move to Florida--we'll be waiting for you! I live in the Clearwater/ Tampa area. There are tons of nursing jobs to choose from, including sign on bonuses and relocation assistance. I work for BayCare, a 9 hospital system with 2 long term care faciities and 8 counties of home health offices. Four of our hospitals are Magnet designated. Check out the jobs online at www.baycarejobs.com (p.s. if you mention my name I get a recruitment bonus). The weather and shopping are great here. We do have our share of traffic, the beautiful beaches more than make up for it. Don't forget your sunscreen! Laura Wisniewski
