If you can't afford pricey American assisted living, then heading south makes sense to me. I wonder how the standards of care compare to american assisted living facilities. Of coarse some of the ones american facilites dont meet the standard either.

I was in Mexico a couple of months ago. That's where I would go if I was towards the end of my days. It's definitely far cheaper than Florida or your local nursing home.

I am a nurse that works in longterm care. The quality of care is good, however, I see many families have to sell their homes and lose everything. The cost of longterm care is obscene. The facilty that I work the residents pay at least $5000.00 a month and that does not include medicine, supplies, cable etc. This can quickly add up. I don't blame them for trying to save money that they worked a lifetime for.
