Hello, I'm considering going into the nursing program. All the nurses that I have met are out-going and confident people. Does the job make you this way, or is that the kind of person it takes? I'm a little bit introverted but certainly not afraid to take a stand and speak up if I need to. I know it will be hard work to get into the program, but I feel that being a nurse is something I can be successful in. I am compassionate and would love to grow as a person through doing nursing and interacting with all kinds of people while helping them. Can someone tell me their perspective about what it takes to be a nurse? And also, I hear the pay is good (and the shortage big), is this true- or a myth as some have said? I'm looking to go for a bachelors in RN.

Yes I think you have what it takes.  However, if I were you, I'd get my ADN first, start working and have the employer either help pay for or fully pay for my BSN.  There are lots of nurses who are quieter, but never underestimate their compassion, skills, confidence or ability to stand up for themselves.

Thank you for the tip, your probably right, its better to have some experience than to go straight into the BA of Nursing... Just don't want to become stuck in ADNwithout the time to go back to school! It seems there really is a shortage, if employers are willing to pay tuition. If only there were more teachers of Nursing.. at the community college i'm enrolled in now there is a shortage of teachers and so the chances of getting in are tougher.. but that's alright its all about the dedication i suppose. If only this chemistry weren't so tough! ::)

Miriam89- don't sell yourself short- if you have the financial support to go straight through for your BSN then do it. Tuition reimbursement programs vary but most require a specific time which you will need to work for that institution in return for their support which limits your nursing opportunites. There are also limits on the amount they will pay over course of employment so you can always go for MSN and use tuition reimbursement at that time, once you have found your nursing niche. And then there is also the arguement that the BSN will be the required entry level for nursing in the near future...

my personal opinion is the mandatory requirement for BSN is not going to happen anytime soon.  Several of the states who tried this have rescinded because of the nursing shortage.

Just do it.... If you feel it in your heart to be a nurse... you can do it.... just remember, don't just become an RN for the money.... there are other careers that pay good and not necessarily is working with sick people... what you have to ask yourself is...if you like people and are you willing to work under some pressure?  I asked myself these questions and I have never looked back... It is a very rewarding well-paid career but it comes with a price.  Are you willing to pay it?  Good Luck!

I always advise go for the BSN. Many hospitals do pay extra for the BSN. There really is a big difference in the education.
