failed out of BSN program

Posted about 5 years ago Hi. I was in a BSN program and failed a class when I first started. I then retook the class and got a B in it. Then this past fall I failed Adult Health I, which was an 8 week fast paced class by less than 1%. I had a 78.7 and needed an 80 or higher. I got kicked out of the program and can't go back. It has been hard, but I'm trying to get my associates degree now from excelsior college, which is distance learning. I'm finding it hard to focus and do things on my own without class. Its just very disheartening to want something and try so hard only to fail. I was supposed to graduate next weekend. Any advice or input would be appreciated. Thanks. Stephanie |

| Posted about 5 years ago Hey girl, do not give up. Where were you in school? As badly as they need nurses and they are saying you cannot have another chance? Well screw them. You just go on to another school and get er done. It is tough doing the classes online. You have to really have plenty of self discipline to do it. I loved the online classes. If you are struggling to get things done make yourself a schedule and stick to it just like you have to go to class. Set that time aside for "your Class" Make friends with those in your class and email back and forth and trade phone numbers. You can do this.
Get a picture of your dream car and tack it right above your work station. Make the car your reward for finishing the program.

| Posted about 5 years ago Thanks for the positive outlook and advice! I was going to Mercy College of Northwest Ohio in Toledo, OH. And yes they pretty much told me that that was it, I couldn't have another chance. The reason that I am going to this school is that I thought it wouldn't take as long as a two year program and a lot of other programs flat out told me that I wouldn't get accepted into their program because I failed out of another nursing program, so that was very frustrating. But I am going to try my hardest to get through this and hopefully be a better person and nurse in the long run. |

| Posted about 5 years ago If you just flat cannot get into any nursing program look into something like medical office assistant, PT or OT. |

| Posted about 5 years ago You should first try to talk with another college. Explain to them it was an accelerated program and that you only slightly fell behind. You may have to take a prolonged program instead of the accelerated program. I am only suggesting this, because there has to be a way to accomplish your goals. What ever you do, don't give up. If you talk to another school and they tell you the same, just go on to the next place. I'm sure that there have to be ways to get a college (any college) to give you another shot at it. If there is anything that I can help with let me know. I would be glad to help in any way possible. I am not sure where you currently live in Ohio, but I live in Lorain county. I can check with the community college here on your behalf. Oh and yes at the community college here they have a university partnership so that you can get your BSN. Email me if you'd like.

I just checked out Excelsior's website. Where do you do your clinicals? I would have loved to gone through school online. How much longer do you have now? I was in a bachelors program at first. I did not flunk out but transfered and boy oh boy was that a mistake. I would have graduated last year. So I can kind of relate to what you are going through. I have some friends that went to school online but not for nursing. The best advice my one friend had was that she set time out on certain days like she would have had to do if she went to an actual classroom. She dedicated this time to school work. Sometimes she said that she even went to the library so she would bot get distracted. If you really want to become a nurse you will do whatever it takes (legally) to become one. I had to do this. I had to cut out a lot of things and I am almost finished. |

| Posted about 5 years ago Hi--seems failing out of BSN programs is an epidemic...It happened to me too in 1998 in my LAST semester. Talk about discouraged! On top of it I was 40 years old, had put myself through college while single-handedly raising my 16 year old rebellious daughter AND--get this--living ON CAMPUS! WHEW!! Well--I did what all of us who KNOW nursing is our CALLING do--I finished by BS in organizational and HR management (as all my nursing credits transferred as electives) at a nearby state college--then applied to an associate's degree nursing program at my community college. I finished my nursing program with an ADN in one year in 2002. I am now about to be 50 years old--10 years after my "failure"--I am a travel nurse, in an RN-MSN online program to be completed in Summer 2009--I make more money, have more atonomy and am having a lot more fun than I would have had I given in to someone else's idea of "failure"! YOU GO GIRL!! and DON'T EVER LET SOMEONE--ANYONE--TELL YOU THAT YOU CAN'T DO SOMETHING!! What would have happened if I had quit when someone else told me to? I would still be 50 years old....... FOLLOW YOUR HEART!! FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS!! JOIN THE RANKS!! WE NEED YOU!! God Bless and keep on moving!! PS...Happy Nurse's Week to all!!!!!
